e46 2004 Engine not starting

Hi Folks
I have been driving BM's for the past 30 years but recently changed to an AUDI a year ago after a series of "bad" and expensive repair experiences with my last BMW 525i. The AUDI is OK but it's just not a BM!:sorry:
I converted my wife to BMW's (wasn't difficult) 20 years ago and she has remained BMW fanatical to the point of believing that BM's don't/can't fail.... I'm "sneaking" on to this site in the hopes that I can get some advice which will enable me to rectify the problem speedily and maintain her faith in her BM so that she doesn't do what I did.
Her 318i e46 "wont start"...the engine turns over strongly but doesn't "fire". .
I will sincerely appreciate advice as to where to start looking for the likely cause/fault
There has been a lot of rain for the past two days and I'm thinking that it could be moisture related..but that's only a guess.

Hi Zound
Thanks for the prompt response.
I will flat-bed it to the repair shop. Diagnostics will certainly do it but I didn't want to take it there only to find that it's something so obvious as a a loose connection - that'd be embarrassing.
Will probably phone the AA and have them see what they can do/find as first step....
Once again thanks for your assistance.

Bas, a longshot but did you try your second key? The chip for thw EWS in my 2003 e85 key wasn't working so the engine would turn over but not start. Worth a try.

Thanks for the tip Lunas....
Tried another key with same result. It sounds as though there is no compression when the engine turns so it's probably to do with fron t end issues.

Hey Bud,

I had the same issue twice. Once it was the CAM shaft sensor and the second time it was the crank sensor.

They aren't very expensive to fix.

Hope you come right
