E39 - Shudder

Hi,

My car has started shuddering when driving - this only happens when accelerating or de-accelerating and at low speeds.

Did a diagnostics test - and everything is perfect - so the engine is not the problem.

Spoke to my mechanic and he thinks it could be the propshaft - has anyone experienced this before?

Have you eliminated the control arms?
I know on the e34 the shuddering came from the lower control arm under braking.

turner motorsport hd upper control arm bushings or monroe for the polly inserts

SA Prop could not do anything for me - so car is booked in at AL Service tomorrow.

Seems like its a problem with the CV joints - so will have to see what the outcome is.:blueCry:

Will update with costs etc:hammerhead:

So i got the "hearse" back on friday afternoon and it feels like new again. :crazylaugh:

The following was done:
New U-joint, Bearing, rubber coupling, CV repair and balancing of propshaft

Total cost is R 5,018.

Dont think thats too bad..............

I am wondering out aloud, but why would it cost so much ?

In my experience, the sudden onset of vibration, is often linked to the counterbalance weights on the propshaft coming off.

if one doesn't drive too long in this situation, then it should just be a new propshaft balancing required
however if one drives with this vibration for extended periods then it will defenitly do damage to the U-Joint, coupling and CV.

I also questioned - it seems that they were worn. Dont know what the previous owner did!

Would like to find out the history of the car! dont have any information! bought from a dealership!

standing brake launches

or spinning sunday nights

mine is on 260000km and its all good but have changed the rear gumbo thingy coz its a part that i can afford to change after its never been changed in its life,

some young cars get less attention than high mileage cars but thats the chance of buying used

at least its sorted now and your car will give you much needed satisfaction that e39s deliver
