Hi guys,

My 525i/t decided to die on me yesterday as i was pulling her out the garage , the idling was very irratic and then she died.

The mechanic picked her up later that afternoon. He advised me this morning that the car was flooded and therefore it would not start................. why would this happen?
He changed the spark plugs and apparently the car sounds perfect, will be picking up this evening.

He also mentioned that the car might need the cooling system to be overhauled/replaced........... is this normal??

The car is a 2002 525i/t Auto with 184 000km.

Cooling systems on the older BMW's tend to need overhauling.

At least it wasn't too major an issue getting her running again :clapper:

flooding can happen from the injectors been stuck open or the regulator is faulty,

if it hasn't happened again i would think its just dirty fuel getting stuck in the injectors

or there was no spark and theres and electrical egremlin happening

Damn - well i hope it does not happen again!

R1000 for the tow and spark plugs and labour! So hopefully the cause was just dirty fuel!

Could be a good idea to remove the injectors have them tested and if needed cleaned. While you are at it you should probably also measure the fuel pressure and see whether it is in spec.
This is of course if you take the word of the mechanic that it was flooded (or is flooding).......changing plugs will have no effect of whether an engine floods or not. In my opinion mechanic is probably taking you for a ride.

Regarding the cooling system, at that mileage you will probably have to look at replacing some parts even if they haven't failed yet, preventative maintenance is crucial when it comes to ensuring the longevity of the engine, especially parts that haven't been replaced yet.

Thanks Chef - what do you think it would cost? Ballpark.

Pff. Difficult to say. Depends on what's already broken and what needs to be done as preventative maintenance.
