E39 Auto, potential Auto Gear box problem ??

So for the last week or so
whenever I engage reverse against the brakes, I get a defenite slightly angrier tone and vibration, when compared to engaging drive (fwd gear)

I have spent over 2 hours following various permutations of words in google search to try to get some answers

so let me put the same topic here, and see if the clever forum people can allay or confirm my fears

Ralf, does it vibrate the car and make a loud grinding noise? And does it worsen when you accelerate in reverse like when going up a hill?

If so, definitely engine mounts.

nope

no grinding noises
more a deep "droning" sound, mainly when reverse engaged against the brakes

less noise when allowed to travel rearwards under idle reverse power
I hardly have to acctually depress the accelerator to reverse, except if parked on an incline

Not sure what you mean with droning sound.

I would start with getting new engine mounts fitted, and not the cheapies from goldwagen either otherwise you'll just have to pay labour to fit new ones in a year again.

Hey Ralf,

Had the same symptoms on my C270 CDI and it was the engine mounts. I could be mistaken.

Doesn't Goldwagen stock a Meyle one?

Remembered reading this this on the interwebs when I saw this thread.

I also noticed that the motor mounts were ridiculously perished, and I was out of money and running out of time. As a solution, I went to the local Sports Authority and picked up six hockey pucks, grabbed a few long, thick Grade 8 bolts, nuts, and washers from Home Depot, drilled through the pucks, put the bolts through, and had that act as motor mounts. To this day they have been the best and most stable motor mounts I've ever had.

Not sure if it is a good idea or if it would work on an E39. Don't even think about it. :RedNo:

1500 each is cheap. What's the brand? I replaced with Meyle I think... I did gearbox mounts too and came in just short of R7k
