E39 540i y-resonator delete

Hey guys.

Anyone done or have an opinion about doing a y-resonator delete on the E39 540? Sure, inside the car it sounds nice with that V8 induction noise, but other than that it's quiet as hell. I am not after a "god has spoken" or "hey look at me" exhaust system, I just want to have the pleasure of hearing and enjoying just a "hint" of that great V8 soundtrack eminating from the back. From what I have read, and also from speaking to my mech, the y-resonator delete seems the cheapest way to go, and it's pretty easily reversable if the need arises and seems like it will gve me what I am looking for, sound-wise.
I wonder why BM made these cars so quite...I can understand the whole luxury thing, but how about a less restrictive, more sporty sounding exhaust for the Sport models at least? Instead all they could do was add a visible tailpipe, instead of the downturned ones...my old E30 AND E46 325i's sounded more ballsy...anyway, advice and opinions much appreciated...and if anyone has done it, where is a good place? I'm In CT. Maybe Noise Boys?

Personally I would do it, these V8's sound awesome, and anything that brings out that sound a bit more is good.

 Spoke to Phillip Duff from Noise Boys here in CT. He recons they have a muffler that replaces the existing twin resonator-silencer setup at the back with nice results for R1200, no resonator delete. Apparently a few guys have done it and were very happy with the results. Now I would normally be skeptical and say, well he's just trying to sell me some P&S, but I have questioned him before when I still had my 528 about exhaust mods on that car and he dissuaded me from doing anything on that car...anyway, again not on my priority list right now, just interesting...if I do do anything, I will post some clips of the results for whomever is interested...

i remove the 2 huge silencers only on mine and it sounds brilliant. cost R100 to do :)

i would suggest you start there and then if its not enough, remove the "y"

I removed my entire exhaust, baffelbox,mufflers,y-resonator,cats .. everything.. and built a new one with two dual pipe freeflow cowley mufflers, and it sounds WADAMN cool .. no droning inside whatsoever ... I don't know anything about that muffler the noiseboys guy was talking about .. but what I do know is that cowley mufflers sound really hot on BMW's ... If I was you I would maybe remove the Y-Mufflers and the backbox, and just install cowley mufflers in their places ... trust me bud, you won't regret it ...

if you want I can maybe make a video of my exhaust ? .. and then you can see if you like it or not ...

I can vouch for clutchplate, the exhaust he has on his car sounds awesome, one of the best you will ever hear.

Thanks for the info guys. I recently went to see Dick at Powerflow in Salt River here in CT. He had a look and we discussed it at length and he strongly suggested that I go the Dual exhaust route, starting with a decat all the way back. My feeling is this sounds like the best way to get the right sound, however, I still wonder how one will route the 2 pipes all the way to the back, ending together on the one side, although Dick seemed to see no issues with that. Seeing he's been in the business for 16 years, I guess he knows what to do. He even offered that we do a pre and post dyno at no charge, to show the power gains. Not that I am neccissarily after more power, but he was quite adamant that spending money on a backbox alone would be a disappointing endevour. Clutchplate, maybe you can upload some pics/ vid to show how you did yours? That would be awesome.

kewl man, will see if I can get it on the lift this week. mine is dual pipes from front to back, ending both on the left at the back... its really easy to route actually ... the cats alone will give you a small performance increase maybe but not much without any freeflow mufflers ... the boxes on the bm's are really restrictive bro

I will make a video tomorrow and then u can hear it also...

Hey Clutchplate... If you ever do get the time (I understand we are all busy) I would still be hugely interested to see how you did your dual exhaust setup, and of course am equally curious about how it sounds...:excited::thumbsup:

Greg, I am glad you went to Powerflow. they are the best in our town. There is also another branch in Bellville run by Roddy, who used to be Dick's partner.
