E38 not all that "bullet proof" after all

Whenever I drive in my E38, I feel almost immune to the other "soft" tin motorvehicles around me, the E38 just feels so solid and heavy, almost like a tank

however caught a glimpse of the SABC news, of an an E38 accident with a taxi on the R511 Steyn City, so I had to go and google the twitter feeds for info about this

shocked at the amount of damage that the E38 "tank" sustained, the roof was totally compressed into a tee-pee

A tank it is. Imagine the damage to a Picanto or something priced similar to the E38 of today, involved in the same accident at the same speed. You can see at least one of them was doing one moer of a speed.

I'd still take my chances in the E38...

Jho!.

Well the E38 is an old design, so I'd rather be in a modern supermini to be honest.
The advancement in safety structures/cells cannot be questioned.

Having watched that video clip and knowing that stretch of road I'd wager that BMW had "less than best" tread depth on the tyres, was speeding (clearly in the video) and ran onto a patch of "river" draining across the road which resulted in aquaplaning and tragedy.:RedNo:

There's ABS EBD ASC TC etc etc but there aint no ANTI GRAVITY CONTROL

Very sad.:thumbdo:

Just watched the video. So sad to see these things. Definitely looks like the beemer was going to fast. Condolences to the families.

It's hard to judge speed from the outside. Was the bimmer coming around a curve? It's very easy to break traction on acceleration in 740i. From what i've observed a number of them have wheel speed sensor errors which I believe means no ABS or traction control.
