Please help me with advice regarding a good quality head gasket for the above car as i am convinced that the head gasket on a friends car has gone and i want to help out by replacing the gasket. Will also be skimming the head and having it pressure tested, but need to buy a good quality gasket set at a decent price! Is Payen any good? And what about strech bolts - what make should i get? Thanks!

I've been using Victor Reinz HG and Head bolts never had any problems. I will be using Payen stretch bolts this week, Elring is also a great brand as its Bmw OEM, I saw that on my m50 timing cover gasket. All the best :joy:

Thanks for all the advice. I am ashamed to admit it but on my advice the owner dumped some sealant into the radiator in order to try and seal the cracked head or blown gasket and now i sit with a head/thermostat/waterpump/radiator that has a lot of muck in it! How do i clean that it. It is sticking to the sides of everything and it comes off when scraping it with an old sharpened tooth brush, but i am afraid the radiator is probably stuffed (it was leaking water from the expansion bottle) so i assume a new radiator is on the list of things to replace together with new thermo and waterpump (last two items were recently replaced)?

Well see this as a good opportunity to renew the cooling system, i.e. new radiator, water pump, thermostat and coolant(agents are the best if you can afford it). With the onset of summer, this will ensure trouble free motoring........where cooling is concerned.
