e36 M3 PETROL GAUGE NEEDLE ISSUES

Hi guyz, i have a 4door M, the problem i have is that that my petrol gauge randomly shifts to empty & back kinda like a rev counter would do....sometimes the needle stays @ empty & I have to give the dash a little smack & the needle goes back to its normal position...PLEASE ADVICE as to what the problem could be & how I can go about solving this...

Well if the problem corrects itself if you smack the dash, there must be a bad connection at the dash. Start from there.

Well it turns out my petrol pump pump was faulty; a couple of days ago my car just died on me, it wouldn't start. Changed the petrol pump & i haven't had the needle issue ever since.

Same problem...car died on me last week after 12 years. Where did you change your petrol pump and if I may ask, how much did it set you back.
