Hi guys.
Looking for a e36 M3 GermanSpec as a project.
But just want to know the general maintenance and costs of them?
Like oil filter, petrol filter, brakes, suspension bushes etc etc.
And can anyone give some advice on common faults with it?
And lastly what are you guys averaging with fuel consumption?

Thanks a mill guys

Oil filter and petrol filters are relatively cheap, as it's the same part across all E36's.
Spark plugs are about R130 each. BMW Bosch Y5DDC
Rear trailing arm bushes are R400 per side
Brakes pads and disks + sensors All Round OEM is R8.5k

All in all, it's not too far away from general BMW prices.... But it's always good to keep some cash available for rainy days about R10 to 15k... This is the case for any bmw out of plan...

I don't really think that there are common SPECIFIC faults associated with this car.
You got to look out for general faults associated with wear and tear....

Try to find a well cared for car, rather than a "project". It will probably be cheaper in the long run....

Fuel consumption:long highway trips at a steady 130kmh gives around 8 l/100km.
Mixed driving around 10.5 l/100km. Stop and go traffic 12.5 l/100 km.

Good luck with your search

Wow.. thats really not bad at all!
I always thought that there maintenance costs and fuel bill was allot more..
I mean comparing to the other cars I've owned its really not bad.
I mean just the front brakes on my Fiesta ST cost R6k.. Four spark plugs on my Golf 5 GTi cost me a grand.. and with my stock Focus ST I averaged 18l per 100km and that's driving under 120kmh and shifting before boost..
Clutch kit on a Golf 5 GTi is R12k without fitment (dono what the kit for the M costs) and just a new turbo for the GTI cost R30k.. I'm sure for R30k I can rebuild the Ms motor over completely?
Reason why I never bought a M was because everyone pumped into my head that its as heavy as a v8 and as expensive to maintain as a Ferrari.. lol. And thst you can't drive it as a everyday car..

I'm assuming you bought your turbo from the dealership.... R30k is daylight robbery for a turbo. I have no idea who manufactures gti turbos. But bmws turbos can be had from 9 to 13k from turbodirect. Which is the exact same that bmw uses.

And I don't think you'll get away with a R30k rebuild. Well for a good job atleast.

You will also have clutch and dmf which will be costly. I don't know how much the e36 m3 clutch costs. But I assume you can get a LUK or sachs clutch and dmf for around 10k.

Is vanos not an issue with theses cars aswell?

the clutch is R2895 - sachs clutch from BEEMOW in jhb

Sparks OEM cost about R1200 to R1400 for iridium set (x6)
everything else not bad, bowl them for discounts!
clutch kit R6500
Brakes All round R6500

overally not bad

I have a 3.2l M3 ~ anything from 8 to 14 L/100km obviously more if you put foot

But you just considering regular maintenance.. If stuff breaks or fails.. Well then it can get expensive. Reason being most parts are made just for this car, and not shared with others, hence the premium. If everything is running well, it's one of the best cars in the world!

I dont know if I missed it but if it wasnt mentioned is that oil is expensive in relation to other cars.

Castrol TWS Professional which is what you get from BMW is like over a grand.

Some other guys have tried other oils but I wouldnt risk it with my car.
