E36 M3 Gear selecting

HI Guys

My M gears are extremely hard to select in the mornings.

You have to like force it in and sometimes it doesnt go into 3 and 4!

Clutch is soft though

Any ideas what needs to be done?

(Try) bleed the clutch 'hydraulic system' to make sure it has all new 'brake' fluid in.

Mine was black when i got the car

Sounds like a slave cylinder issue, replace the slave and fluid, also do a gearbox oil change.

is it fine taking all the other gears? (besides 3 - 4)

Usually its the seals in the Slave Cylinder that tend to go/wear over time... you can replace the seals if you know how to strip it and DIY (this will be cheap as the seals only cost a few bucks) or you can replace the whole slave Cylinder.. do it and see if this fixes your issue. best to drain out old brake fluid before you start this job, you dont want that spilling anywhere...

I replaced the seals in my E30 325i and my E36 328i track car. its not a big job if you have some basic tools.

Edit: while you busy with all that, its best to do as the other guys recommended and replace gearbox oil one time.

When the car is cold its hard to get it in 3 and 4 it goes into the other gears fine but you have to force it in.

I will def try the seals before changing the complete slave and will do the gearbox flush this weekend.
