E36 M3 Fuel Gauge

Hi Guys,

Hope you can give me some advice. My fuel guage on the M3 is not reading accurately?

When I fill up the tank, the fuel guage needle only goes to 3/4. As I use up the fuel, it only comes down to 1/4

My question is, which sensors could potentially be the ones I need to change?

Will this be In the tank??

Any DIY procedures you can recommend?

Note, when I do the self diagnostic test using the key and odometer reset button, the needle on the fuel gauge moves all the way to full and back. So I suspect it's a sensor

Thanks

Sounds like you have hassles with both the floats in the tank. My E60 would only show 3/4 when the tank was full and I found it to be the passenger side float that was jamming against a pipe in the tank and was prevented from floating all the way up.

Some years ago my E46 ran out of fuel while the gauge read 1/4. I replaced the drivers side one and the hassle went away.

Be very careful when re-inserting the float units and ensure you remove the seal from around the float and put the seal on the tank first and then slide the float unit in - else you will have leaks past the seal.

Do this when you know you're close to empty - obviously

Good luck:thumbs:

Thanks dude, this helps.

Need to sort this out. I got stuck recently when the needle didnt move from half tank for 3 days.

I thought, "my, this car is getting lighter on fuel by the day" - little did I know
