E36 Front Bumper Removal

Hey peeps,

So i've just bought me the E36 M3 style front spoiler/lip :) NOW, i wana install this myself. And from what i can tell, i'd have to remove the front bumper - has anyone here done this before?

I have found a DIY on what to do, but was just wondering if anyone here has done this, how easy or difficult was it actually? Seems pretty easy to do, but thought i'd check with you guys first..

OH - these are the two write ups i found amongst others too :

1. Place car on ramps or jack stands. Chock your wheels
2. Remove 1 (8mm) screw in each front fender well. (located about 1/2 way up)
3. Get under the car and remove 4 (8mm) screws from the inner fender support (The Y shaped thing) on each side.
4. With these out of the way, reach in and disconnect the fog lights in the bumper, and the temp sensors in the brake ducts (both sides)
5. Remove front bumper trim with a flat head screwdriver (small panel where the tow hook screws in and corresponding part on opposite side).
6. Remove 4 (14mm?) nuts.
7. Slide bumper support along with bumper cover forward and off the car.
8. Pat yourself on the back because you removed your front bumper!

Installation is the reverse of removal (hold up on the bumper when tightening the front 4 nuts to insure a tight seam against grill panel)

On the BMW E36 3 Series models, there are circumstances in which you will need to remove the front bumper. For instance, to remove factory fog lights or install a lip spoiler. That in mind, this tech article covers the steps involved in removing the front bumper.

First, jack the front of the car up. This will help in accessing the lower bumper mounting screws. Be sure to chock the rear wheels and place the car on suitable jack stands.

With the car securely on jack stands, the next step is to very gently pry off the tow eye cover on the passenger side, on the front bumper. At the same time, gently pry off the driver’s side trim strip as well. Directly under these trim strips, you will find the bumper mounting brackets. The bumper is held to them by two nuts in each bracket. Remove the two nuts in each side and place the nuts somewhere where they wont get lost.
Next, crawl under the front of the car and remove the screws from the left and right side corner trim and remove the trim pieces. Now turn the steering wheel all the way to the left, and look in the passenger side wheel well. In the very front, you will notice two screws connecting the front bumper to the inner wheel well arches. Remove these two screws. Now, turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and look in the driver’s side wheel well. Remove the two screws on this side as well.
Now, look up under the bumper and disconnect the electrical connections to the fog lights. Just pull back on the clip and pull them off. Move the plugs out of the way. Disconnect the electrical connector for the outside air temperature sensor on the rear of the left side of the bumper. Now disconnect the harness connector for the temperature switch at the rear of the right side of the bumper, (if applicable, some cars don’t have these parts, if you don’t have them on your car, just skip this step.)
You should be able to now simply slide the front bumper off the mounting brackets. You may want to have a friend help you do this, as the bumper is a large piece and can be awkward to move by yourself. Plus you don’t want to take the chance of dropping the bumper and damaging it.
To –reinstall the bumper, make sure that the mounting brackets line up correctly and follow the removal instructions in reverse, making sure that everything lines up correctly.

removing the bumper is easy.. remove the 2 screws in the wheel arch. then the 4 nuts behind the bumper trim. then 1 person lifts and pulls bumper away a bit and another unplugs spots & temp sensor. it should take 5 minutes..
as for the lip, i dont know how it works..

The lip you can screw on whilst the bumper is installed, but its easier to screw the lip on with the bumper lying upside down, and screwing from above.

Yeah, just ask for gutter bolts and nuts and get the ones that look about the right length to fit. They shouldnt need to be too long. I cant remember the exact length though.
