e36 consumption

Hi guys, just checked the display thingy mibob in the car and it says that I'm currently using 15.6l per 100km. Is this normal?

The suspect is a 93 model 325i auto. If it's not normal what causes this amount of consumption or an it be tuned via the computer box?

How are you driving it and in what road/traffic conditions. I can only get under 12-13 if I drive carefully.

15 seems normal if you are not skilled in driving an auto.

lol, my first auto. Always try too keep it reasonable. I'm an old man and interested in comfort more than speed. I must say though, the 141kw is very nice.

Ballistic , Hi and welcome . The 141 kW is at 5900 revs . It takes a bit of energy to get moving , torque is a bit low at lower revs so consumption suffers , your cruising should be ok .
The consumption meter is also not too accurate , my 325i manual gave about 13l/100 yet showed about 12 , my 328i shows about 9.3 and gets 10.5 .

Being a student the monies are always low for petrol. In the one and a half years that I have owned this car I have learnt exactly how to drive it for maximum economy.

Always keep your eye on the consumption gauge in the cluster (Get it below 10 and try hold it there @ your desired speed).

That and use winter mode is the only advice I can really give. Takes a lot of practice.

Switch next to gearlever , car may then normally pull off in 2nd gear .

I have a E36 318i auto. I think `94 model. Do I have winter mode. Next to gearshift the swith shows from top down : S, E, M - Sports, Economy, Manual modes.

Yes it also has low bottom end torque. I tend to try to get to 60-70km/h quick as I can and then start lifting my foot 1mm at a time until i get to about 7-8L/100.

Yes I know its a 318 and not 325 but I still think its very heavy on juice. I had a Opel Monza 180 GLX before the 318i and I cannot compare fuel consumption. The Opel were driven on fumes many time.

What I can say on the getting it below 10l/100 is that say when going to hit a highway, I try to get to the 110-120km/h zone fast and then lift the foot mm by mm until you feel you just about to loose some speed. I got mine to about 7l/100 at speed of 120-130km/h on the N2.

15 ltrs sounds a bit much I do better with my 540i

On my 328i vert, auto I tend to range between 11.5 & 12.5, must be said because the 328i has the roof off while I drive I tend to cruise rather than abuse.

You have Manual instead of winter.

Thats similar to my driving strategy. Get to the required speed asap and hold the needle as low as I can without dropping in speed.

I try never to use more than 2.5k rpm if I'm not in 'fight' mode. In stop-go you'll always suffer but gearing up as soon as possible and using small throttle openings helps.
Will admit though that the autobox has to be 'coerced' into changing at low rpms, but the benefits are real.

I must admit that my autobox hits top gear before 60km/h. But the time it takes to get there is just very annoying. In sports mode I can get 60km/h before it changes to 2nd.

Heres some shots of todays fuel consumption on the R300 and N2. Hopefully the gauge is`nt way off with usage.

Winter or economy mode best to get most out of a litre .
With 328i I sometimes change to 2nd at 60 then go to 5th , manual has long gearing as well .

So true. But as soon as my prop is sorted I'll give it some more practise.
