Check that your crank case breather hose is not torn or loose. A friend of mine had the same petrol smell on her 316i and we found after replacing a torn breather hose, it solved the problem. Also had this on my e36 a while back.

I know that the E36 has a problem with the fuel level sensor in the tank (which sits under the rear seat) which is prone to cracking the plastic cover. If you lift up the rear seat and lift the flap in the carpet you will find the cover to the fuel level sensor. Have a good look to see if it is not leaking. It smells quite badly if you drive around with a full tank of fuel because if the plastic cover is cracked it leaks petrol.
