e30 323i starting problem.

I would just like to know what could be the possible cause of this issue on our e30 323i?
When the car has been driven and left in the sun for +/-10 min it would do nothing when the key is turned.
One can hear the fuel pump going on when the key is turned, but neither the starter, nor the solenoid even makes a click.
After about 5 attempts, it would eventually turn the starter motor if I switched off everything (radio, a/c fan, not touching the brake – rear lights off).
Is this one of those models where you must “keep it in a cool place”:) or “keep out of direct sun light”:nono:, since it doesn’t do this when the ambient temp is lower ie. at night???
The car has no other electrical problems whatsoever and it doesn’t seem like the harness has ever been tampered with. I did already clean and tighten the contacts on the starter solenoid, but to no avail.
PS – battery is old , but never loses charge, even after a 1 month “rest”. It would start first time even after such a long stationary period.

I had something similar. The starter wasn't getting enough power. Had to have a relay installed... I remember the auto electrician calling it something more specific, but I can't recall what. Now if I turn the key the whole rocks a little as the starter kicks in.
