There's something that ol skool beemers have, that new beemers (or should I say BMW's) simply dont have. I think it's charisma. 4 round headlights, backward slanting grille, front hinged hoods and my personal fav.... twin slanted tailpipes.

@ Mr T - I agree, old school just has something that the newbies don't.

Be it the raw smell of fuel and oil, the worry at the back of your head sayong "if something happens, where the hech will I find the spares...", the feeling of experiencing true workmanship and the best of all - the sound that those old school straight sixes produce is, well, enough to make you have an accident...oooooohhhhhh :blab:

I have been on the look out for one of these lately and after a lot of digging I have come across one infact there is a good chance that it might actually be this one.

Could anyone advise me on what to look for when buying one of these cars...any common problems associated with the model

The car has done 110k km so any parts that might need to be replaced around this time

Any help guys would be greatly appreciated!

These cars are getting to the border of ancient now and therefore require lots of attention to upkeep.
The 2 most important things on these cars are:
1.) Rust!! Check everywhere, although it seems that the boot floor, rear sills, side sills (hiding under the Mtech kit) and the lower parts of the doors are most prone to the tin worm.
2.) The second thing is the timing equipment. The timing chain usually snaps at 100k and F*s up the entire engine which is the most expensive part of the whole car. Then also the timing chain tensioner, tensioner rails and guides will need replacing by now. Valve shims will need attention as well.
Their gearboxes are prone to fail on the syncros and the braking system is a hydraulic unit that works from the powersteering which is also not the best in terms of reliability.
Unless you sell your soul and pledge to be this car’s eternal slave, you DON’T want it. It is very expensive to maintain, no one knows how to work on these cars and parts are difficult to source. It is slow, guzzles gas like it is for free and the car handles like a whale.
All of this doom and gloom didn’t stop me from having one, because as far as I am concerned, it is still the most beautiful BMW ever produced. And that M88 howling @7000RPM is the most glorious, titillating and hair raising experience – even if it is slow my today’s standards. I could just stare at that engine for hours…..

Yes this is the one that I am looking at I'm gonna try and make arrangements to go and view it

All these pics are of this particular car ,spent most of its life in pretoria so I'm hoping that rust is not an issue. How much would a car like this go for....I know there are a lot of factors that would affect this question but jus looking for a ball park figure.

I remember having seen this car for sale a few years ago.
the frontal pic was in the exact location. Cape province plates IIRC.
How much do they want for it?
It does look very good in the pics

Ummmmm like absoloutly everything, how big is your wallet?

let's see, do you dig playing high stakes poker? Owning one is a bit like that I guess.

Let me give you an example, mine needs some minor parts this month, nothing major at all, just some plug leads and a dizzy cap and rotor..... Only R10K from the agents but I'm getting Bosch on Ebay for a mere R6K what a bargain.

This is like every fscking month non stop, but I love the car so much I don't count the cash but really the E28/34 M5's are only for the financialy brave or plain stupid like me.

If you do go for it, oh boy can they reward you when they are going well. Like Fordkoppie says, hearing these giant 6 pots at 7400 rpm will keep raising the hair on the back of your neck no matter how many times you hear it.

They really are automotive art, no denying it.
