E12 Fuel Consumption

My E12 528i (Auto) is really heavy on petrol and I was wondering if the petrol pump might have any influence on the petrol consumption. If not what must I look into in order to reduce the consumption.

How heavy is heavy? I don't think you can expect much from those old inline 6. Even the E30 325i is quite heavy even when just cruising.

10 liters per 40km (Rough estimate).. It wasn't this bad before, it spent about 8Months in the garage and the sound made by the petrol pump is significantly louder.

I would expect cruising at 120 to get about 9-9.5 km per litre at best . Town could be 13-17 litres per 100 Km , so 6 to 7.5 kilos per litre . So you consumption of 25 litres per 100 Km is high ( 4 km per litre ).

The petrol pump should not be noisy , if it is then it is on its way out . If the car stood 8 months check the fuel filter and you may have dirty injectors as well . Air Cleaner condition ?
