Drivetrain error

Hi guys,

I recently purchased a 2012 118i for my mother with around 80k odd Kim's from SMG DURBAN. We purchased it just over 6 months ago and the car has been to SMG 9 times for the above error. Injectors were replaced, new battery put in, brand new engine which smokes and a few other items. But every time we get the car back this error pops up within a few days and the car shudders and loses power. The reason I got her the car, other than a small token of appreciation for growing me up, was that she travels late at times due to retail hours and I wanted to make sure she is safe as her Polo was getting old.

Currently the car is still at the dealership as we did not fetch it when they called then saying injectors was blocked a few weeks after putting new ones. Courtesy car was returned when they requested it. I have gone the legal route and a letter of demand was sent to SMG to which they replied on the last day saying we have had the car over 6 months therefore the CPA act I think, doesn't apply. Initially I knew we had this time limit but they always stalled the return days when fixing this issue kind off like intended.

We are now awaiting a meeting with our lawyer to see a way forward. I personally feel that whilst our purchased date is just over 6 months, we did not have possession of over 6 months, it has been at SMG more than with my mother.

I purchased 6 cars and referred 2 other purchases since 2014 just from SMG alone. Their service is absolutely kak, the knowledge of the technicians is crap, they only know to log on computer, see error and change part. They have no experience in troubleshooting etc. they also refusing to come to the party by assisting us into getting another car or refunding us. I paid R220k only to be offered R160k and pay listed price for another car. We were offered a 3 series with also 80 odd on the clock, completely a base model with no extras at R280k or something like that. That means me paying in another R120k to get that shit. So I enquired about trading in my 3 series as well, 2015 320i M Performance Edition with 39kms I think and was offered R290k for it. I rather give my mother my 3 series and use the refund to buy me something else as I am looking to replace my GTR.

Does anyone here know why this error could be? Also, anyone here getting crap service from the mentioned dealership?

Would really appreciate any advice on the car or the legal route?

Hey Bud

On the error side it's possibly the Exhaust Solenoid... from what I was told it's a common issue with the F20. It's not an expensive fix (invoice showed ~1.5k) but mine was done under warranty, 60k km later no issues

Sounds like you were better off with the old polo. New generation BMWs shouldn't be owned outside a motorplan of some sort. If you do then you better have a firm understanding as to what is involved keeping them driving out of your own pocket. BMW reliability has gone to shit, both in product and service.

Thanks guys,

An update. I had my lawyer send SMG a letter of demand to which their lawyers responded by saying the car had a 20 point check before selling therefore the product was not defective. Also the time has past the 6 month time limit for reversing the deal or claiming a full refund. We are not entitled any form of assistance it seems. This leaves me with a crap car or take a 60k knock on a trade in.

Really disappointed with SMG, should have trusted my gut and went to Supertech. Currently handed my f30 3 series to my mother and will await the outcome to decide what to get.

Really liking the M3 both v8 and new one. The v10 M5 also has some appeal.

All BMW dealers are the same. All. Sales managers have the same pathetic attitude when a dispute pops up. Workshops are filled with technicians, and not mechanics. Their philosophy is replace rather than repair, because they lack the knowledge on how to repair, and because "the diagnostic machine said so".

I had my fair share of shit with them.
My M135i had a continuous oil leak and gave the same drive train error shit. They wanted to replace my car after 3 months but wanted to charge me 20k for mileage I had done, and a further 50k to transfer my ACS chip, when ACS themselves said it costs nothing.

Both my N63s had leaky injectors (official recall) and despite changing twice, they could not get it right. Eventually the entire motor was changed and the problem still wasn't resolved. They then did a software update and it was fixed. What a waste of 3 months and a 300k sub assembly.

The thing with Drivetrain Error, is that it could be 100 different things and they aren't interested in troubleshooting on that level.

Take your knock and trade in bru, you aren't gonna win this one. Sorry

First world cars in a third world country. With our terrible fuel quality and lack of well trained workshop staff in dealerships and BMW bringing out more and more advanced cars the situation is only going to get worse.

To the OP, take the knock on the lemon and get a simple and affordable car from a Japanese manufacturer and not worry about poor workshop staff again.

SMG Durban really has a bad reputation when it comes to pre-owned cars and their pre purchase inspections. A good friend of mine bought his pre-owned 135i through them about 3 years ago, and did the inspection because the car was still under motorplan, feeling confident of their inspection, he went through with the purchase.

A few months later coming down Kloofnek in Cape Town, the back of the let loose, when they stopped to look at it, the whole rear axle appeared to be loose somehow, and upon taking a closer look, we saw that the car had obvious previous damage.

He fought with them for long and ultimately lost, putting a claim in with his insurance to deal with it.

If you check Hello Peter you'll find numerous similar complaints on them, try contacting BMW SA to see if you can get some help.

Also the F-series 116i and 118i are known to be problem children, my colleague just had her engine replaced with not even 80 000 km on her 118i, and on the way home the turbo decided to take a dive, needless to say her first BMW experience was sh*t, and she promptly returned to VW, If you can help it, go for the 120i and up.

What a shame. I have no idea why BMW doesn't take such dealers to task. They are always quick to sell you cars and dont care after that. :dunnoanymore::thumbdo:
