Disco 1 - BMW 0

Something different ...

Had my Land Rover Disco3 V8 for about a year and really enjoyed it. However, it was used mainly as my weekend/family vehicle on longish trips, while the wife used it to do the daily school run. My daily driver was always the BMs.

This week for the first time in a year I used it daily to work and back in heavy traffic, as my 330d is with the Dent Doc for some work. Apart from the hectic fuel consumption average (17l/100km), I'm really, really impressed at how this vehicle performs as a daily driver.

Never really had to work the V8 to get going - most of the time, I was below 2000RPM due to the heavy traffic. I take the back roads between Midrand and Bryanston and usually slow down for all the regular road "imperfections" along the route, as I feel every bump in the BMW with sports suspension (E46 and E90). In the Landy, I knew they were there, but I barely felt them.

Strange how I got so used to the route in my BMW and now with the Landy, it's almost like I've rediscovered a new vehicle. I'm in love with my Disco3 all over again.

When the roads are clear, it's obviously gonna be a different story for the BMW, but in traffic and on normal Guateng back roads (read as cr@p), give me a Discovery over a BMW any day  .... and some extra cash for fuel

A family friend also have one of these Disco 3s with the BMW M62b44 V8 and he also always got 17l/100 average. His landy had 100k Km on the clock and then decided to take out the cats. f.cons dropped to 14l/100 instantly.

My overall consumption in the 540 is about the same, but then 80% of the time I just drive it to work and back which is about a 6km round trip through town. But it just moves along so effortlessly :)

Interesting - will start researching options on Disco3 decatting ...

17l/100km is hectic in my books man.

So based on that

Disco 1 BMW 1

My dad's ML500 is worse than that. As a daily driver, Midrand to Pretoria and back, in moderate traffic. He used to get 23l/100km

My LR Defender 110 (13 months old now) is also great fun in traffic. Only reason is the taxi's seem to be scared of the big ARB bull bar and winch on the front of it.

Only reason I use the BM daily is to fit into car parking lots. The Landy is too high.

My cosumption in the Landy is around 11ltrs per 100kms around town which I find strange as its so much less than the Disco. expected the other way around but maybe its due to the size of the motor and the weight of the Disco.

Nice feedback

The game has all changed now with the 2011; X3 and X5 and those that will come after them.

The suspension is absolutely fantastic. Gone is the hard sporty rides that were common in BMW'S...even in the X1...but it is all gone now. Day & night. The suspension is comfortable, pleasing, direct and flawless. Take the new X3 for a test drive and you will understand.

All new bmw's (from late 2011) come with the new suspension technology including Eco Drive - here you cannot beat the fuel consumption in the new Xs. Run Flat Technology is now in a league of its own. You will not recognise it from previous BMW suspensions. Super comfort and when you want to put it in sport+ mode it does not turn "hard" or harsh but more direct, controlled and superbly planted no matter the horrible road surfaces. I had to choose between the latest Disco and the new X3 and the Disco had everything you want in a hardcore offroader (all bells & whistles and price point) but the road handling of the BMW is simply pure BMW and this is where I use the X most.

As in anything it depends what you want to do with the vehicle.

Off road I will not use anything but my defender, although the disco is also brilliant off road, but the electronic gizmos give trouble deep in the bush (like electronic hand brake).
i had to rescue a X5 in Mozambique who got stuck on a flat beach. An X5 will not make it where i travel without seriously damaging itself and getting stuck. I believe its not a true off road vehicle and is only 4x4 for slipper flat surfaces (like snow , wet grass etc) . Have you seen what a wet grassy slope does to an X5?
Also, you can not mix low profile tyres and (true) off road driving with out damaging something and getting stuck.
off road = off road . (A dirt road is still a road.)

City driving/driving to CT from JHB I would use the Disco over the X3 (girls/moms car) and X5 (hugely more expensive).

Drove the new X3 and it's impressive. However, if I were in the market to replace the Disco3, it would be with a Disco4, since I spend a little time off road and was in situations where low-range was required.

Don't get me wrong, I love BMW's but their X cars are for the road only and my weekend vehicle needs to be more than that.

The real surprise to me (and the reason for the thread) is how admirably the car actually does in terms of road comfort.

MSM...I hear you  Thanks for the clarity.

What about a soft "tune" to reduce the fuel consumption?

Yep - depends on costs though, as gains are not usually worth it on N/A motors. Will chat to the guys who service my car (Landyworx) and take it from there.

But I guess I can't expect a vehicle weighing 2.6 tons to be economical too.

I have the same experience, love the Disco 3:inlove:

Traffic also seems to clear quicker when the 2,7 ton beast approaches:thumbs:

all disco3 v8s has the jaguar ajv8 motor in it - Disco3 never had the bmw m62tub44 motor or any bmw motor in it.

2002-2005 range rover (big body) v8 has bmw m62tub44 motor in it - 2006 and later as well as range rover sport has the jaguar ajv8 (same as disco)
