DEKRA Inspection result

I am in the process of buying a 2nd hand BMW privately. Everything with the car checks out, I had Francois and John check out the history for me, no comments, FSH and low mileage for the year.

However, with the DEKRA report (required when MFC finances) it notes "residual traces of repair" on the front bumpers, fenders, rear left fender, left door, bonnet, rear bumper. The techie told me it definitely had work done. Now the current owner did not do any spraywork, and he got it from a BMW dealer where it was traded.

What could be the reason for this amount of spraywork? And it would've happened while under motorplan. I noticed the bonnet had work done when I looked at it but overall the car looked in great nick. Does DEKRA have it wrong maybe?

A keen eye will pick up the spray work. It may have been done without the insurance privately.

Best case scenario: It could have the front bumper resprayed and parts next to it/lower down. Common practice by many car dealers to get this done, usually due to stonechips or minor marks. Sometimes these are done as cheaply as possible without removing panels or covering the rest properly resulting in overspray on other areas.

I've seen some knobs do these "call out/we come to you" spray jobs on wheels and end up messing the rest of the car instead of taking the wheels off to respray them.

This seems like the best explanation. No structural damage was noted anywhere so it must've been cosmetic only.

This is the full Dekra test if I am not mistaken. They take the car for a whole day, so they have a lot of time to really inspect the car, and I suspect they even take a few things off and put it back on as part of the inspection.

Even if the painters/repairs was a proper job, if you know what to look for, you will see if there were painting done, because I have not found someone that puts on the same primer as BMW on the panels on the inside where you usually can't see.

That said, it sounds like cosmetic repairs to make it look better.

There are 3 or 4 levels of Dekra checks. From simple Road Worthy to the full technical inspection.

I did the full full technical inspection on a demo Mazda CX5 in 2016. They found issues that even the Mazda dealer did not know about (hidden scratches, a tyre with a tiny nail in it, etc). They check everything, short of stripping the car.

I doubt MFC will pay for the full technical exam. They probably requested the mid-level Dekra report. My advice would be to ask Dekra to upgrade that report to the full technical exam (alone, it costs about R2k, last I checked). This would give you peace of mind if the car had structural damage.

Sounds cometic from what you describe... maybe previous owner was cheating and wife keyed "Small Penis" on the side..

I'm currently in the process of buying a car through MFC and it was a private seller, its a requirement for the car to go for a Dekra Road worthy test as well as Technical inspection, this process takes between 2-3 hours and has to be booked with Dekra in advance cant just randomly take the car there.

If Dekra find any faults on the car it is noted, they even plug into the cars computer to check the sensors etc, so in some cases if you got a modified car its almost certain it will fail the tests and MFC has access to Dekra's system where they look at the report, if they are not happy with what they see they will not finance the car they will tell you to source another car instead even if you are happy with the issues.

It was the full technical check, for R2000. There are also a few error codes but that is expected, at least now I know what they are. It is a very thorough check.
