Declaring mods to insurance

When I first got my car and arranged insurance I was asked whether my car had performance enhancing modifications and my answer was no. When I finally did install mods and declared them to my insurance, they refused to insure me further as they were not willing to accept the increased risk.

This got me wondering, how many people have performance enhancing mods on their car and actually declare it to their insurance?

When I had a Ford Focus ST 2 years ago I declared the intake and downpipe to my insurance company. They just required fitment and a receipt from an rmi approved fitment centre. There was no additional costs to my monthly premium.

I suppose the rules vary with different insurance companies. I hope this helps.

change your insurance. :bin:
Increased risk should simply mean increased premiums to my mind.
And what's raised the risk I would ask. If the purpose you're signed up and insured for is commuting and social use, then how has a performance enhancing modification changed that?
If you were being turned down cos you're now using the car for drag racing or converted it to an army tank, then yeh an insurer should refuse to insure you, but you're not

Was with BMW Insurance, and never had issues. Now swopped over to Santam and no problems.

Declare the mods to the insurance cause otherwise they will eventually find them and deny the claim.

I had a turbo Corsa as a run around many years ago and got into an accident. They went to look at the car and Some dude called me late on a Friday after(probably to ruin my weekend) to tell me they rejecting the claim cause the car is modified(in a very chirpy and happy tone)

I asked them to get the recording of my call to quote and start insurance. In that call they asked me if it was modified and I replied yes, at no point was I told they don’t do modified cars. So come Monday the same chap had to call me back and reverse his statement of them not paying out my claim...

Point of my 2c, save urself the troubles and tell the insurance.

mmmmm i love moments like these..off topic..i had Mr Harris look at one of my old Tags with someone wanting to buy it..he said its fake..the sales lady looks at me and tells the guy to come to them to buy a real Tag..i insist that he opens the watch..he opens it and says.."oh it is a real tag" no apology ..says he has never seen a movement like that before..i tell him he is an arrogant fool...i look at the sales lady..she looks a fool too..apologises..

Well done on getting paid out..i had a claim rejected and its not fun.

From a legal standpoint, declare everything - full disclosure. They can repudiate claims on very general and "all-encompassing" clauses. Better yet query whether your risk will increase and therefore premium, or if they will even cover you, should you proceed with a mod. Unless you're willing to risk a repudiation and ready to lose in Court :fencelook:

Just declare your mods. Your premium may go up slightly but at least there will be no issues when it comes time to claim.

I took a different approach, I have my e92 for 8yrs, the book/insured value isn't much. So I added all the mods that I have on my car to increase my insurance payout should the car ever be written off.... For reference, it wasn't expensive either, it was something like an extra R15 for every R1000 of 'accessory/mod' insured. Happy to send you my brokers details via pm if you're interested

Do they give issues if the mods are original BMW performance parts? Do you have to declare those as well?
