Cooling Fan F30

Had the problem some time back and was advise to change the battery which I did.

The cooling fan comes on high speed, on a cold start. I have to turn the car off the get it to stop. No warning lights. No Faults found. This is my first BMW and I always decided against these cars. There must of been a good reason. Don't know why I changed my mind. Anyway....any ideas good people. bear in mind I still have to replace the oil line turbo pipe at R3000.00.

Guess the car is out of plan.. Is all the software on the car up to date? My 335i had similar symptoms but only in traffic where the fan came on a lot.. BMW did a software update and car was fine, never noticed the fan ever again. I do avoid a lot of traffic as of late though!

Sounds like a thermostat could be giving this problem

A thermostat wouldn't let the fan run. It could be a temperature sensor not reading correctly. The oil line for the turbo should not cause this, but can cause damage to the turbo if oil feed to it is insufficient. I suggest you start with the sensor that switch the fan on for temperature or the one for for the aircon to bring down the head pressure on the compressor.

Hi All

I noticed that the cooling fan does not go on after I start the car in the morning. I warm the car for 10 min, When I drive off, The fan comes on at full speed.

When I switch the car off, the fan stops. Its fine after that. But I notice this only happens in the morning. While using the car during the day, this does not happen. So its only in the morning on a cold start.

Any Ideas.....much appreciated.

Further to the above, where can I purchase striping at a good price. BMW is ridiculous.

Had similiar problem, the fan was replaced but they confirmed it was the sensor on the fan it self.
But ours came on when it wanted to on FULL "stage 2" and only went off when putting the car off.

Isnt the fan operating in that way, see ....

If you start the car from cold, the fan will not run until the car has reached the 80 - 100°C (engine it is) (you are nice and warm in the winter in the first 2 blocks from the house) and then come on for a brief moment to get the temperature to the desired range, say 86 - 89°C. Once in that temperature the fan will come on and off without you knowing it as it will only pulsate for brief moments while driving. In traffic it will be a different story as the fan will come on more, seeing that the car is standing still most of the time while idling.

Your car has 3 temperature ranges in which it operates to deliver optimum power and performance. On idle it operates at a higher temp say 103 - 115°C and while driving in city it will do 90 - 100°C and highway it will be colder at 82 - 89°C...... something like that, google it. I had this problem and concern before and found that there is different profiles for city driving, aka slow speed, idling speed and highway speed. So the fan will operate at different speeds during these times, dont quote me on the temp ranges but I think they in that area.

The car operates in these ranges to deliver optimum performance and flow of oil etc. Hope this helps.

BUT it shouldnt go on full blast all the time, then you have a thermostat issue most likely or the water pump is on the way out. Best would be to check the temperatures during this time, mean the digital temperatures not that stupid gauge on the dashboard. Oh and 120°C + is overheating :=): Also the fan always stop when you switch off the BMW. It shouldnt be running otherwise it will point to a thermostat or waterpump issue, N52 or those external electric guys ...... dumb bmw move there

Good Day All

The struggle continues. I'm starting to regret buying this car.

However, still enjoy the ride.

I have replaced the thermostat however, The cooling fan still come on high speed. Switch the car off and its fine. This morning I started the car, while reversing, the fan came on.The strange thing is, If I start the car later in the day(in the afternoon and its warm) The fan does not come on.

So I'm not sure if it the fan sensor that is the problem. I've seen on you tube that this is a common problem with these cars. Can someone please advise that had this problem and what exactly is wrong. If possible please post pics of the faulty part that I must replace as I do not seem to find any solution on you tube.

The service center cant seem to find the fault on their systems as the system shows no error.

I had this issue on my F30 335i where the radiator fan would come on at full blast randomly and not slow down again until I switched the car off and on. After taking it in to BMW several times they replaced the fan and the problem has gone away. I suspect its the fan sensor.
