Coolant Tank problems 520D

Last week I reported my Coolant being empty. I purchased the Ant-freeze as required, but since returning home from holiday, the tank has depleted twice already_yesterday was the third time. Could this be a leak in the tank - I don't see any wet content below the tank,  nor any cracks in the pipes leading from and to the coolant tank?

Are you finding oil when you open the expansion tank cap?

If so, you might have an oil cooler problem where oil is getting into the cooling system, this displacing the water. So not a water leak so to speak but rather an oil issue.

If this is your problem, you need to flush out the cooling system thoroughly

Hi Yuben. I can’t say I did, however I will have a look again.  I attached a picture of the first time this happened.

You either have a hair line crack on the water bottle or the radiator

With a hairline crack the leak would only happen under pressure and the heat in the system would dry up the leak.

I had this with one of our e90 and it was the radiator.

Can you feel oil residue on the cap?

Hi Yuben, checked this morning, no oil residue - no choice but to book the car in at BM for check-up. Will give feedback on the group when I get the quote :)

So, Vehicle has been with BM for two days - They can't find any leaks, so they believe it may be what they call the EGR - apparently this is the device or system which moves coolant through the vehicle - it may be at fault or not functioning correctly - estimated bill R21000

Cool, good luck and let us know of the outcome

This is what I found out about the EGR "If the EGR cooling system (06) develops a leak, water can escape into the EGR system and pass through the engine, accounting for gradual coolant loss. If that happens, the whole EGR body - which is typically one big stainless steel component - needs to be changed out.

Only saw this thread now... Had the exact same issue with my car (F10 520d) towards the end of last year. Booked it in and they told me the same thing and did the EGR work (under MP fortunately). Have not experienced a problem since. Good luck!

Well, they called to let me know they are going to try and get head office to pay, however I have passed the 100km warranty. May I ask what is MP - I presume the M is for Manufacturer ?

MP=Motorplan

You could also remove the EGR completely with a delete kit. Would be cheaper than replacing the EGR Cooler.

Would require the ecu software to be flashed otherwise it will throw a fault light on the dash. total for the kit, labour and flash would be cheaper than the 21k.

So, final outcome, BM-SA paid 6k of the 21k bill, final total I paid was 15k. Im presuming this is a known problem thus the financial support from BM-SA, but as my vehicle was out of MP, I had to fit 70% of the bill.

What was the context around BM assistance?

Just asking for assistance or are there parameters they look at? X km off MP/X time off MP?

Glad you got it sorted!
