Are you comparing the same models of each shape, ie, 125i with 125i?

e87 is the f20 predecessor.

Looking at that aspect you will have newer technology in in the F20, and due to the e87 being older, you might incur additional maintenance costs, depending on km's and how the previous owner looked after the car.

I cant comment on the general reliability of these models, but I would suggest you phone up your local BMW dealer, Goldwagen, Midas etc and ask them to provide you some prices on general parts like brake pads, filters, etc to make an informed decision. Thats what I would do.

Engine preference?

Turbo or NA

I think in order to assist we are going to need a budget as well, because they are two different platforms and they costs are miles apart. the F2x is not cheap were as the e87 can be picked up within R0 - R200k

I think for this comparison, dirtydeedsman is right. Give us your budget, and what model you are looking for, and we can steer you in the right direction.

While you at it, can you please turn on your spell checker? :hammerhead:

Expensive is relative, how much are you willing to pay for brake pads or service kit and proper tires etc... Pick a E87 120i and F20 120i then check your local shop and see how much these things go for and you will get your answer for expensive or not

9K = R9000
90K = R90 000
900k =R900 000
9000k = R9 000 000
:hammerhead:

I presume you mean R90 000? In that case, if you can find a F20 for that kind of money, please let me know, as I would like to buy it.

My advice: For R90k, get a well looked after E46.

Here is a good example, and you have some change to save for maintenance. https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=80912

Lol Chap came looking for advice on a 1 series and he is being shown 3 series.

Reminds me of a thread were a guy was asking the best option between a 325i and 320D and was told to buy an M3 instead... sigh

I think the budget was unrealistic to start off with.
Guys just giving their inputs on better purchases

+1...
I am starting to think that the OP maybe meant 9k a month as an installment. In that case a good 120d f20 would be the best option IMO.
