Clutch and DMF questions

Sup fanatics

Been reading abit on dmf's on the forum
This has probably been covered before.

Question: is it possible to determine whether your flywheel is shot without removing it?
Gear changes seem abit tight but they don't grind and my release bearing is abit noisy.

When the box is warm there is a slight shudder when pulling away using only the clutch pedal...although if I rev like a reverend then I don't feel it.

If I drive hard I can feel some slip between 2nd and 3rd, and it smells like a train station when I pull into the garage at home. So........I intend replacing the clutch kit in the near future and if I can save on the dmf that would be awesome.

Also I've been reading mixed opinions on various forums about skim/polishing the dmf... what are the fanatics opinions on this?

How would you guys feel about purchasing a second hand flywheel? And how would you check if it's in a decent condition? I'm only asking this coz Bruces in Kenilworth was prepared to replace mine with a second hand one.
I'm not being a cheapskate but I don't want to blow money I don't have to.....

The car in q is an E36 (325)

I would replace the dmf with a new one, or even better a slightly lighter one for some added rev-ability. Have a look at the below kit from turner.

http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-1629-e36-e46-z3-z4-jb-racing-sachs-hd-clutch-and-flywheel-kit.aspx

I purchased the same flywheel and clutch masters FX400 clutch about a year ago, have not fitted it yet tho. :fencelook:
Shot man. Will check it out.

$1500.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know....out of appreciation of Nikhil reply.....i didnt wanna mention that..... no offence Nikhil

lol all good man  was just putting out there, since you have plans to upgrade to more power in future you may as well build the drive train for it

So other than buying the white house from Turner motorsport.....what are my options? And I there anyway to deduce whether the flywheel is shot?

Don't get me wrong Nikhil....you've helped me out so much in the past that every reply is greatly considered

Have you flushed the clutch / brake fluid out properly ?

Secondly have you removed the CDV, I had a little bit of shudder that was gone once I removed it.

The slipping could show that it's maybe gone too far, what's your current mileage ?

I replaced the slave cylinder a few months ago and obviously bled the system....bleeding the entire brake system is on my to do list for December. I don't have a CDV. I've checked already. But I know the clutch will need replacing in time to come. So that's really y I'm asking about the dmf

If you are shuddering and smelling it implies that you have been driving it like it is stolen............

Changing clutch pressure plate thrust bearing a pre requisite roughly R3000

Now the DMF cannot be skimmed successfully so do not travel that route.

DMFs suffer from hard use as the rubber sandwich breaks down so skimming it only compounds the problem

I am afraid your pocket shall bleed as the only way out is to replace it roughly R5000

Do remember that you need to bed the clutch in as you would brakes,so no hard pulls for 1000Km after the renewal.

ok well an luk clutch kit (clutch, pressure plate and thrust bearing) will cost about R3500 the last time i checked. The flywheel can be skimmed but only to a certain degree, if it is warn past a certain point and you skim it you will sit with issues so it will have to be inspected upon removal and either skim or replace it:=):

Ive never looked for a oem replacement flywheel but I do know that the dual mass is crazy expensive.

However from what ive read you can use an M20 flywheel which is lighter and a "performance" upgrade for the 325i/328i this is also a single mass so you will sacrifice a little torque for a freely revving engine.

hope this helps

And as Peter said the bedding in process is a must, no fast or abrupt gear changes or high revving for the 1st 800km to 1000km.:=):

Hmmmm. Now there's some interesting info.....will I still be using the clutch kit for an m50 (Getrag box)......or would I need to purchase a different clutch kit? And do all the bolt holes like up WRT the flywheel?

^^Never mind.... researching...^^

You may need to re drill some of them but it really is easy.

I replaced the clutch on my 325i E46 about two years ago, my dmf was also burnt a bit but no cash at the time (was told is R7K for a new one) so I just put it back as is, there was a very slight shudder when pulling away but I learnt to manage it, I was told not to try to cut it as it would be ruined. btw, the clutch just gives out suddenly, it starts slipping in higher gears and then one day its just gone.
TIP: the longer you drive it with the slippage, the more damage you are doing to the DMF.
