Chipped E46

Hi there. I recently did some mods to my 330CI Steptronic. But am now experiencing lag on pull away. Suppose due to the automatic gearbox. Anybody out there with suggestions to eliminate or minimize the lag?

This forum has taught me one thing: E46 automatic gearboxes are going to fail at some point, BMW won't be able to figure out why, and you will pay out your butt for it and eventually want to sell the whole car.

Go manual. :)

Yes would be too simple an answer here, but you can alway speak to the guys that forked out R15-30k for new auto boxes and kept coming back...

You guys know me well :)

In this case though, maybe not the box just yet, did you have issues on pullaway before you did the mod, if not, look at your mods... I assume a chip, maybe something went wrong... does she rev smoothly ?

Edit : Also, boxes that are broken either slip or whine, no noises or jerkyness means its prob something else

My pull away was fine before hand. The story that was told to me is because of all the torque coming from the engine is reduced by the torque convertor to reduce damage to the power train.

Sorry. I assume u mean free reving and not while driving. That also seems fine to me.

Erm.... Somehow I dont think so...

Torque converters reducing torque to help the engine cope, thats a new one :)

Your car has been setup incorrectly dude, more then likely somebody screwed up...

What chip did you put in, Unichip ?

The chip was done by Dastek and assume it is a unichip. Even the dyno report shows the initial dip in power and then formes a " smoother " curb as it climbs. The exhaust system was also done with branches.:bs:

Dastek manufactures the Unichip, and if you had it done with them its probably the Series Q chip...

Rumour has it that SAC now owns Dastek

I doubt thats your driveline, I really do, but there is a simple way to find out, replace it with a manual box :)

Seriously take the car past a shop with a scanner and have them just take a look,

Make no mistake. I will choose a manual box over automatic any day. just could not get one with manual box when i was doing my shopping. Who can i speak to regarding the extend of mod necsassary to change to manual.
How do u mean a shop with a scanner??

Gizmo is our local auto to manual swopping guy, and he can assist with sourcing and installation, I think his last quote was 14k including box.

What I mean by a shop with a scanner is somebody that can plug in yar car and look at the error history and see if there is something wrong/misbehaving.

Not all errors cause the egine light to go on, meaning that if you are down on power, the computer may be compensating for something, specially with the introduction of the chip.

Nothing wrong with chipping if its done right.

However XPower makes some valid points, do not go for a piggy back chip, but flash your current ECU, Piggy back chips cannot control everything such as VANOS that could boost performance, couple of guys out there that does some really good work.

Send a private message to Gizmo, I am sure he will come back to you.

I had a chat to Daniel @ CSV on the forum here and he recons that flashing the ECU is far more friendly in the long run without stressing the electronic components (ECU/EMS) of the car unnecessarily.

Agreed on the piggy back.. the only piggy that is as good (or even better) than the standard Bimmer ECU is the AEM system and you can't get it here.

Just remember that the stock ECU has a limited number of re-flashes after which it locks up and can basically be binned.. REALLY!

UniQ can do loads in terms of fuel, timing and add ons such as NOS, meth and boost control but cannot control VANOS which is where most of your low end power comes from... once you are WOT, VANOS is not as important however low down it is ALL important..

It could be your Vanos pump... or even something as simple as a fuel filter or your fuel pump could be packing up..

More than likely tho the map you got is not properly done ... get this fixed ASAP as a rich mix will put you down on power and be annoying but a lean mix can and eventually will totally destroy your engine (trust me on this one)

So how can i find out what chip was fitted? Any ideas as to where i can take my car and know for a fact that a proper setup will be done? In the Gauteng area of course.
