Check engine light working??????

Now that is a conundrum.

I'm pretty sure mine isn't. My car has many issues and it never tells me about them. I think I may need to pull my cluster out to check the bulb.

Sorry, I realise this isn't too helpful, but you're not alone.

Would disconnecting a spark-plug lead or something introduce a fault code? That's all I can think of.

If you are referring to the bulb itself, it should light up when you start the car as all the lights on the dash do a check.

Alternatively, go to somebody that can do diagnostics on a a car, and run the self test function on the instrument cluster, it should light up, it looks like a xmas tree when every single light on the cluster is on, and the needles are moving up and down sequantially, but ya Clownshoe is 100% right, the EML light should come on when you turn the key to just before starting position.

There should be a check "check engine light" light.

I think you can do the instrument cluster self test yourself. You need to go into the hidden menus. Which BMW is it?
