CHANGING FROM RUNFLATS - MOTORPLAN

Hi all.

My friend has an Z4 m. His runflat tyre caught something and is totally bugged.

He is thinkiing of replacing with normal tyres but he heard you can lose your motorplan if you swop out runflats for normal tyres.

Is this true?? If so its bloody stupid and not worth the risk of swopping them out.

Luke...

There's a few threads on this already so if you do a search you would find something recent wrt to this.

In short if the car is on MP... stay on RFT's no questions asked. There's been speculation that you can go normal but has to be BMW approved but i have not yet seen anything concrete to say they won't cancel MP..

Rather stick to the RFT tyres... yes the ride is harder but hey if it saves your MP...

The problem is not MP but his insurance. If he is with BMW insure then he will have to inform them. If with another insurance company; then it is unlikely that RFTs will be a prescription.

I love my RFTs.

You can contact bmw customer service . I have been told that you are more then welcome to change from runflats to std tyres. However MP will not cover any claim as a result of damage caused by using non rft tyres... You will also have to pay in cash if you require bmw on call to assist you with changing a flat tyre on your non rft tyre.

I just bought myself a sparewheel kit and will be moving to standard tyres next week after I have my wheels refurbed...

If you need any other info, plz don't hesitate to drop me a pm.

RFT's are way better than normal tyres. Especially when you got a flat in a dangerous area. I belong to a support group and a number of Beemir drivers mostly ladies say that they were thankful for RFT, 5 of them had picked up “total flats” whilst driving through Diepsloot late at night. Being stranded there is a no-no. PS.: I am not saying Diepkloot is a bad place, do not get me wrong, but if you look at Police reports, it is not the safest place to be stranded late at night.

Personal preference i suppose but I'm not a fan of RFT's.I have changed my runflats on two cars under motorplan which was serviced at 3 or 4 different dealerships in that time and there was never an issue.

Z4M as far as im aware dont come standard with RFT's . They use normal tyres and have puncture solution in the boot. So if its the case that the previous owner changed to RFT's it should be fine going back to normal. Just get approved BMW tyres( star on the sidewall).

Indeed. Had one meself. The Z4 M has normal tyres, so no clue as to how he managed to go runflats on those....? Perhaps conned at a tyre shop...

Just another thing, you can get fined for running normal with no spare nowadays? Coisman can gooi PK if I'm mistaken, but I think it's the law!

I recall this from having one of the first ST's in Joburg. Was shipped with tyre goop and conti-air compressor, but Ford did a bulletin to provide all owners without spares actual biscuits with a complete fitment kit at no charge due to the law here?

Motorplan is just a way to insist that you by BMW Approved tyres, RFT's or non-RFT's for that matter, basically the brands that are OEM for BMW. They will spin every story under the sun why you will not be covered for various things if you use non-BMW Approved tyres. Not sure that they will simply void the motorplan, but for instance, they will say that suspension problems won't be covered, alignment etc. Even said that they won't cover drivetrain issues - really?!

Insurance, to play safe have them acknowledge this in black and white - but then again, it's not as if you are being given a premium discount for having RFT's!

Anyway, my vote is still that RFT's are great, and in particular if there is not really any space for a space-saver - Z4 boot is small!

Hi German_spec,

Do you have the 225M msport wheels. (19's)?

I'm trying to build a case against BMW for their cracking 225M rims.

Please like my page on facebook call BMW Cracking 225M Rims.

Thanks,

I changed my E90 335i rft to standard tyres and i never had any issues with BMW at any of the various dealerships i had the car serviced/fixed at.

it also bares noting that i had ALOT of trouble with that car and was in at the dealer a lot, if they were going to be funny about it then they had ample opportunity.

Also changed to standard tyres on my 335i a while back and has some major work done recently, all covered on MP without a hitch

Its a much smoother drive and the 335i seems to handle way better than with the rft's, sometimes I really push it and I can feel a big difference. However I can see the benefits of rft's for ladies who are stuck at night, but in my opinion rft's on a performance car are a NO GO, will never go back to run craps...
