Hi, Anyone out the who has changed their front speakers, or know how to do so? Also, I'd like to fit an amplifier, is there a way this should be done? I believe in being my own man whenever possible.

Does yours have one tweeter or a mid and tweeter in each front door? Its fairly simple to replace the one tweeter type with a split system. And for the two speaker type you get a three-way jbl system that fits right in. I fitted these to my old cabrio and it made a huge difference!

It has the twitters on the doors and the mid next to the accelerator! My question is, how does one remove the speaker next to the accelerator?

How did you remove the front speaker next to the accelerator?

Hi Mcfly.

I replaced my mids in the kick panels with 6'' mids, that was almost a perfect fit. With regards to the speaker next to the accelerator, you will have to remove the panel the covers the part of the dash under the steering, as well as the bonnet release mechanism.

If you going 6'', then you are going to need to some work on the bonnet release mechanism, as it wont clear the speaker frame...

Just remove the covers underneath the dashboard on both passenger and driver side(just above the foot space), then the plastic cover that shields the speakers can be easily removed, the plastic shields have screws holding them.

To remove the plastic shield on the driver side is the same except there is a bonnet catch handle situated there which has a screw as well so u need to remove that handle as well.

Its not difficult just be patient and careful with the plastics and keep all the screws u removed in a container and not left on the seat causing bruises on the leather ....i did mines and i managed to fit 6'' mids on both sides with ease!!!

I dont know if there is an easier way with the door speakers but when i changed mine i removed the door panel, unfortunately when doing this it is inevitable to avoid breaking the clips around the door panel, so be sure to have a few of those clips at hand!!

Enjoy!!!

I think I will be able to do this. Thanks for the advice.

Remember that if you are using the stock radio, you will not be able to add speakers with a rating above 35W rms. Otherwise you will need to add an amplifier to really get the best out of your new speakers. Maybe post up the spec of the new speakers you are planning on putting in?

Have you guys taken the standard tweeters and grills out of the front door panels or have you put a new tweeter behind the existing grill on the door panel . ? What makes of speakers were used -there may be different mounting depths between them ?

I got it right on my old 328i cab to fit a tweeter behind the grille in the door. I used a set of XTC splits because the mids are shallow depth so they fit right into the footwells. The door was a little more tricky, it involves a glue gun and many glue sticks.
The standard tweeter is fixed to the grill and a screw goes in the back of the tweeter that holds it to the bracket that keeps it in place. I cut out the standard tweeter, glued the new one in and then glued the standard bracket to the back to keep it in place. This used a LOT of glue and didn't look very pretty from the back but from the outside the door looked stock but delivered way better sound!
And on a side note if you're looking for a place to mount an amp, I mounted mine under the backboard on a custom piece of mdf so it fit super tight. This keeps it out of the way.

replaced my front speakers and all is well. Now does anyone know where the amp is located or if the head unit had the amplifier?
