Change Or Refurbish The Alternator On E46

Good morning

So this past weekend I tried to take out the E46 and on start there was a very loud whining sound and the idle was just all sorts of wrong, someone came through to check the car out and told me that the alternator has fault and that maybe the bearing inside is wrong or something like that... he advised me to go to an auto electrician.

There are two common failure items on an alternator - the bearings and the voltage regulator.

A new alternator will be expensive, so I'd suggest rebuilding (replace bearings and voltage regulator) the alternator. You can DIY, or use an Auto-electrician (cost about R3k or so).

Repair the alternator will be cheaper then buying new.
Take it to Breno and let them repair the alternator.
I took a Chevy spark alternator in for repairs recently. R900 or repair and a new pirate alternator was R1450

Thanks for the feedback, I’ll go the route of rebuilding since it will be way less & get the voltage regulator checked & sorted as well.

If you have the Valeo which we mostly had here, change to a Bosch from Diesel Electric.

About R3000.

Valeo are just crap.

On my 2nd 330i, just after I bought it, the alternator also stopped working. Since I was in a hurry, opted for a bosch alternator.

Thank you for this advice, at least now I know that was not the worst choice.

Remove the belt and spin each pulley by hand to see which one is making noise. It might be tensioner or idler pulley or something else causing the noise instead of the alternator.

I’ll do this on the weekend & see how it works out, Thank You.
