My e36 did the same thing with me a few months ago.

I must state that my car has an aftermarket Sanji alarm system:

I had the car in for a service and somewhere the mechanic's shirt or something must've hooked on the bonnet alarm trigger switch. This was bent, didn't make proper contact when the bonnet was closed, and resulted in the alarm being triggered as soon as you lock it.

Bent the breaker switch back into position, and problem solved.

In most cases the bonnet alarm trigger switch is the culprit, get a new one from BMW think its about R100 or so.

Things to check are all the switches...common ones to go are bonnet and boot switch then door switches...Also loose change in the centre console can upset some alarms

I was experiencing the same problem with my e36 95 318i. After checking the bonnet sensor(as many forum posts have suggested) and checking countless other things in an attempt to resolve the problem, I was left with no solution.

The other day I was wiring in a new car radio and came across a wire hanging loose inside the dashboard with a strange connector on the end. After quite a bit of searching, it appears that the old e36 bmw had an alarm sensor connected to the factory fitted radio. With installing after market radio systems the sensor is not longer used. I have simply disconnected the sensor connected to the wires and the problem appears to be resolved.

A few posts online also suggest that if your car battery is about to die, that a random spike in the voltage could cause the alarm to go off. This I do not find that convincing but I suppose maybe for the odd individual this may cause the problem.
