Can you help me find my vin?

AH! one more

Pull the engine DME and look on it, the VIN is printed on a sticker on the front from when they coded it at the factory.

it won't be the full vin, just the last seven digits, but I can get the full one from that.

Some have a separate sticker on the cluster with the VIN as well.

If this car was recovered, the new VIN will be linked to the old VIN somwhere. if they could not recover the VIN you won't they are not stupid either and would have looked everywhere you are as well.

Start looking at plastic mouldings and parts, give me the approximate build date and details of the car I can maybe find a vin "range" it has to fall into. Why do you want the vin so bad anyway, it's been re classified anyway and I don't think you can change that?

One vin decoder site found my stolen/recovered vin to be:
Chassis number 0401712
Vehicle code 0411
Series 259S
Model R 1100 RS 93 (0411 ( 0416) )
Body type 0416)
Catalog model ECE
Production date 1994 / 05
Engine R 1100 RS 93 (0411
Transmission
Steering
Catalyzer NONE

Realoem does not recognize my vin and nor does BMWsa or other vin decoder sites.

I want the vin to find out what year model my car actually is and what options it had. I also want to know if it was originally a manual and then swapped to auto or if it is originally an auto.

etc, etc.

Will try the DME now.

mmmmm

The BMW vin format is letter - letter - five numbers

So that cannot be right.

RS93 can make more sense as all BMW's have "type codes" for example my M5 is a "HD98" and my E34 540 was "HE98" my E39 540 was a "DE62"

if your car was South Arican built the last seven digits could start with "B" or "H"

Rick... THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Found my vin on the DME.
Last 7 digits are: FJ24602

It is a South African
01/1994
Manual

Maybe that explains the 0-100 times of 10-11 seconds. The car probably still has the manual diff.

Where could I find a full build sheet?

You are welcome

It's a type "CB38" you may find more info from that.

Also a manual and auto DME are coded differently might also explain the times.

Good luck with VIN .
Manual diff was 3.15 and I think auto was 3.46 . -Will be on plate on the diff .
0-100 in 8.8 and 120 in 12.0 according to handbook , with 328i having 8.3 and 11.5 . ( Both auto )

from what I've read the manual 325i diff was a 3.15 and the auto a 3.91. That is quite a huge difference.

On a different note. I still want to see if I can find a matching vin somewhere else on the car to confirm because maybe the DME was replaced at a stage. will look behind the cluster later today.

@Rick, how can I get to the steering column section you described. I pulled out the cluster but couldn't see where the column bolts to the chassis.

DME box is still the only vin location. Need to confirm it in one other place before taking things further.

If you still have the original glass windows on your BMW it should have the last six digits of you VIN on it.

It's usually take cluster out and look downwards, it should be obvious if it's there, but not all of them have it.

The only other logical place now is the VIN would be printed on/in software from the cluster.

Can a diagnostic read a vin from the DME as well as the cluster?

Yes it should be able to.
