Can one retrofit front PDC?

Hi all,

Annoyingly, I last night misjudged (i.e. Didn't concentrate) on the curb when parking. Needless to say I scrapped the front a bit.

After a tantrum at myself, cussing the whole world and my bout of crying whilst curled up into the fetal position, I wondered if it would be possible to retrofit front PDC.

My car does not have the iDrive system and I don't know if one got front PDC for any E90s that didn't have it.

Any advice on this would be appreciated. If it is going to be too difficult, too costly, not be a seamless integration or likely be problematic then I will give it a pass but otherwise I will consider it.

Anyone have experience on this?

(I realize this topic could be better placed in another section but wasn't sure which)

Greetings,

on my previous E90 i had front PDC installed with a on/off switch (traffic would make it scream) but it was not integrated but rather a stand alone system. it had its own buzzer to warn and a small display on the windscreen. was relatively inexpensive to install. think i paid around R2500 from rivonia car sound. Rakesh Rama the owner personally was involved and arranged the colour coding and so forth.

with the Sat Nav i know they also did a reverse camera option linked to canbus and displayed on the nav screen but at the time i think it was alittle out my budget for a gadget.

chat to them maybe things have changed since

I think I will give them call.

I have never had front PDC before and just read that the the sensors don't pick up curbs easily cause they are too low. Is this true?

it all depends on the kit as well as the angle of the sensors. some kits will pick up as low as 10cm from the road surface

the high end kits are programmable even. some pick up as far as 1.5 meters

The sensors will not help with curbs.. You need to learn to judge your car, I have full iDrive PDC and it does not pickup low curbs.. Damaged my Carbon splitter when I was really tired some time ago, learnt my lesson, now I am more cautious! Front camera would be ideal IMO!

If an OEM one won't work, there are aftermarket PDC sets available. Try and find a decent quality one though, with sensors that have a better range than some of the cheaper kits.

It is for this very reason I have been second guessing whether I should ever put on carbon lips or splitters. Would hate to damage it.

I am going to look around and see what sets are available, but in all honesty I should just be more careful. I could have avoided the incident if I concentrated.

Thanks for the replies.

If you already have rear pdc, I think the code is SA620 or there about then yes you can retrofit oem front pdc. You would need the four pdc sensors, the harness cable that runs along driver side all the way to the boot of the car, a new pdc control module which has a second black connector for the front as well as the center console button that turns the front pdc on and off. Thereafter you would need to code car to enable front pdc.

Can you please show some pics of the sensors on the bumper (I want to see if it looks OEM). I might be interested.

Well at present, you can retrofit a front camera as easy as you would retrofit front PDC. Totally up to you on what you prefer, after having the reverse camera...i would never want a car with PDC sensors again and would rather have all round camera view.

I don't have the iDrive screen but have considered one of these in car screens that run on Android (get some that look OEM) then I can add Waze and other apps like Drivvo which I use . If so do that I will consider the cameras.

I find the sensors helpful for most curbs if not all.

Front PDC is really useful and has saved the front end of my car many times but on an E90 it does not pick up kerbs - with the OEM PDC sensors/positions that is.

I drove my sister's X5 and the Nissan X-Trail and both had all-round view. the X5 was brilliant, the view of either side was perfect!

The X-trail was not bad off either...pretty decent!

I have always seen the PDC from China. Never seen one in person or tested it. My car does have front and rear but front does not switch on unless you hit the button. Think it is designed like that? Even on takeoff, only time it comes on is if I reverse, then it stays on till I reach a certain speed.

Pdc for front requires the button being pressed unless you have the extra, then it activates automatically. Can't recall the package it comes on.
