buying car with outstanding licenses

I need some advice regarding buying a vehicle where the ad state license fees are outstanding for 2 years.

So the reason why I am looking at this vehicle in the first place, is I am checking out all my options around repairing my accident damaged e46 330i. One of these options is, to buy a car as a donor vehicle for all the parts I need, if I can get it at a low enough price, and then the rest will be parted out, or if easier, sold to someone that parts out the rest of the car.

The advice I need is, what are the legal issues I may facing, if I buy this vehicle. I don't intend on driving it, unless its drivable from the seller to my house.

Side question, is it possible to write off the vehicle with outstanding license fees?

If you buy the car "as is" you won't be able to transfer ownership of the vehicle until the fees and penalties and arrears (now 3 separate things) are all paid up to date on the current owner's name.

Once the vehicle has been transferred into your name, you will then be liable for the new licence fees for the coming year (pro-rata), roadworthy if required and police clearance if necessary.

When all the fees have been paid you will be issued with a registration certificate but the licence disk won't be issued to you until the car has passed a roadworthy test.

Make sure that the name on the registration certificate is the same as the ID docs provided and that the "transfer of ownership form" is signed and has the correct details on it.

Download a barcode scanner so you can scan the disk on the car and the registration certificate as well, because the documents can be forged and the scanner will tell you exactly what's for what.

Ideally I just want the vehicle scrapped, so that I can use the parts that I need and get rid of the rest. Seems like, even for a donor vehicle I may not want to get into something where the fees are outstanding.

Outstanding fees will be the responsibility of the new owner. 2 Years so you looking at about R1,400 depending on the type/age of vehicle. Other fines may also be due.

Get the exact amount due from the traffic department and negotiate with the seller before purchase.

How much of the car are you looking to use?

If it's just to fix your 330i, then I would consider negotiating the licence fees as part of the deal and then getting the donor car's paperwork up to date at least.

Its easier to sell a rolling chassis/parts car with it's paperwork intact versus a car with scrap papers.

Most of the front. Since its a FL and mine is pre-FL.

- Bonnet
- Fenders / front side panels
- headlights
- indicators
- radiator/headlight mount bracket (while I could bend mine back, this would be easier)
- stiffener
- front bumper until I get mtech1 replacement
- any other bits and pieces I am somehow missing at the front.

All of that, will leave a car that was running, in a running condition, except not quite road worthy without all the lights. I personally think it would be easier to sell the rest of the parts.

Agreed. Will definitely make it part of the deal and sort it out if I am going with this specific vehicle.

Recently bought a car from a guy that didn't register it on his name after buying it from an auction (was still on the bank's name). Had about 2 years outstanding fees so I had to pay around 2k. Was a nightmare getting it registered on my name.
