buying an e46

Hi there,
I'm looking to buy me a car and the E46 is my top choice!
(Seeing that it falls in the same price range as a golf4 and jetta4 and I'll rather buy a BMW)

I can get a 2000 (or 2001) model 318i automatic for around R55000 but the thing is it has 220000km on. But except for that the car is in excellent condition! Not using any oil, water anything weird like that.

The thing is, how high are the maintenance on these cars (especially this model) and will it give me a lot of problems?

I still think for that price, it isn't a bad buy looking past the km....

Any advice or opinions?

Thanks

Read around the forum and you will realise that maintenance might just be the cost of a dead Chicken. But no more expensive than say a Hyundai and perhaps slightly cheaper.

My 1000000000000000Zim$ worth. :)

I think you gonna get a variety of answers for your question. Some guys have had some bad luck, other have had very little bad luck... the important thing is you have come to the right place :)

I personaly dont think there is much differenec in maintenance costs between the golf and jetta 4's. Provided you look after your e46. Dont be stingy and service her regularly. Chat to the clever guys onthe forum and get an idea of when to service. Some guys dont wait for the service indicator to count all the way down.

There will obviously be some stuff that your car would need to make her sweet, but the guys on here will give you a good heads up.
Expansion tanks normally need replacing etc. tackle one thing at a time till your done, then its routine maintenance.
The yanks have a problem with the pre facelift rear subframe tearing out, i havent ben able to get and answer as to wether this applies to euro spec cars like ours. I do know that the problem was rectified with the facelift models ( 2003 onwards )

Where i would advise you to be patient is in looking for the right car. I would also recommend that you look to private sellers. Second hand stealers rip the poephol right out the chicken.
When i was looking the average price for a Facelift 318i 2003 model was between 95k and 103k and then the mielage was over 200k.

I found my car in joburg ( i am in PE ) a 2003 318i Facelift with 150k on the clock ( just had 150k service ) Full service history, black leather interior was like new, not a scratch on the seats ( even smelt like a new car/leather inside and still does ) steering wheel controls and all the trimmings, the engine bay was spotless. Car was bought by a gentleman for his wife to go to work and back on ( highway Km's )
The vehicle was/is in showroom condition, onl thing i did was replace one of the breather/vent pipes as it got squashed under one of the engine covers. ( R320 )
Owner wanted R79k offered him R75 and we shook hands. Car went to AA for a once over, just in case, and passed with flying colours ( guy at AA called me and wanted to know if i wanted to sell the car :) lol )

If you dont have the cash on hand, go to FNB and go private to private finance, couple of my mates have used them and they are very happy.
When i called my broker to add the car to my policy he said that he cant insure it for what i paid, the book value is R109,770

So a car, better, newer, lower Km's and a single owner for about R20k less than a second hand dealer car.. and all it took was some patience and hunting. Worth it i think

Maybe spend a Liiiiitle bit more now and get a Facelift 318i... the difference in motors and hence power is big. pre face is a 88kW/118bhp where the facelift is a 105kw/141bhp 2.0L
My best mate has a pre face 318i, hence my advice

Go get yourself a BMW !! You will love the experience ! It truly is sheer driving pleasure

Hi Stiffler_PE
Thanks for the nice reply!
I would prefer a facelift one, but I thought for the price I was going to pay (about 55K) I will settle for a older one.
I also read about the rear subframe tearing out...
My main concern was the maintenance costs compared to that of a golf/jetta 4. And so far they seem pretty much the same... ??

If you willing to do a little DIY work on the car, maintenance is not going to cost you very much at all.

WRT the rear subframe issues, I wouldnt even worry about that on a 318/320, its only when you start getting to the more powerful models that it can become a problem.

Freerider is most correct... if your willing to get some grease and muck under the old finger nails you will be surprised at the maintenance costs.

I have seen Facelift models down here in PE at second hand stealers for as low as R83k lately. Now ask yourself, what did the poor guy get that traded / sold the car to the stealer ??? i can assure you he didnt get anything close to R70k.
Thats why i say... keep your eyes on all the online sites. You are going to come accross the guy who has just come back from a dealer or secand hand dealer and is shocked at what he was offered. He sells private an dgets more than a trade and you pay less cause you havent lined a greasy salesmans pocket :)

My old man bought his E class merc through dodgy means lol... went to look at the car and got a peak at the cars book, took a chance and phoned the guy in the book who happened to be a doctor and was still the owner. They got chatting and the poor doctor was getting WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY less than what the car was on the floor for !!!!

They met up and came to an agreement. My dad saved himself tens of thousands of SA Rand and the seller got more for his car... everyone happy

After that i decided to look privately for my cars lol... and it worked as i told you in previous post.

If you got time.. just keep your eyes peeled... they are out there. Good luck Bud... look forward to welcoming you to the BMW family :pimp:
