Buying advice for E87 130i M-Sport

Hey guys,

So i'm new to BMW, and recently decided to buy myself one. Originally I did some research on the E82 120d as I was interested in that, but I have since changed my mind and decided on getting the E87 130i M-Sport instead.

I'm going to look at one on Saturday and was wondering if there is anything in particular to look at/for when inspecting this vehicle.

I have already got the VIN number and have started my search into the vehicle history, so I'm mainly looking for advice with regards to the visual inspection and the test drive.

Please help a BMW noob. :fencelook:

Ok after some more research I've noticed some guys talking about the valve lifters having issues. Can someone advise me in technical terms what exactly is the issue here?

Should I have them checked while the car is under warranty, or is it something I shouldn't be too concerned about?

Hey bud,

Check out in 1-series sub-forum, there are a few threads there about buying a 130i, lol.

The lifters issue you are referring to is a ticking noise you can hear when the car idles, or revs up gently. Like in the old days with the cars who had noisy tappets.

Mine were replaced around 90000kms, but the issue still crops up every now and then.

I wouldn't call it a deal-breaker in buying the car, but if it's still under motorplan, ask them to investigate. Also check what else has been done to the car while under motorplan, that can give a good indication of it's life.

The only real negative with these cars is the extremely hard ride, but this can be fixed a bit by fitting normal tyres instead of the runflats.

Oh - when you go test drive, make sure all the windows are open so that you can hear the sound
