Hey guys,

I'm in one of those moods where i feel like i need to upgrade my graphics card. :=):

Has anybody here ever purchased one off eBay? The pricing looks good but not sure if it's risky etc? Anything specific to note/look out for?

Anybody purchased something recently with success?

Considering possible duties and taxes on electronics I would advise against it. Over and above, your shipping will probably be substantial (unless you use SAPO, in which case - good luck getting your GFX card).

Lastly, if you decide to go this route, make sure you have an international warranty.

Uhm, your gonna get mixed reviews. Have you tried Amazon? is there a massive difference in pricing between ebay and amazon?

What GPU is it?

I don't know - the forums and comments on Amazon etc. suggest that a lot of guys who receive replacement cards for defects and the original cards end up on eBay. Wary of something like a GPU. However that said, I've purchased plenty of electronics myself off eBay with good success. A brand new card off eBay or Amazon to me has to be at an exceptional price since you need to factor in insured shipping and you essentially have no warranty since you will likely have to pay for return shipping if something goes wrong.

There are lots of guys selling cards used locally as well and they are usually very negotiable when you wade through the few that are convinced their GTX650 is a 'gaming beast'. I've been tempted to pick up another card or a newer gen card myself since I have a second x16 PCI-e slot on my board (Single GTX970 at 5760x1080 struggles a bit in newer games).

What are you looking at getting?

evetech.co.za FTW

I wouldn't trust anything from e-bay or the likes unless you buying from a reputable reseller with good reviews and take some sort of insurance

Thinking of getting a GTX 1070, have currently got a GTX 1060 6GB but starting feeling tempted when i saw you can get a brand new 1070 for the equivalent of R5000 from the States...
Dunno if it will be worth the upgrade if i have to fork out R7k plus for a local one...

if i was spending that cash id rather fork a bit more out, then if it blows up i can just drive to the shop for a new one.

the USA is a bit far...

If it's a 1070 get it locally Evetech has specials now and then with these cards don't bother on eBay if it's not a 1080ti.... When I bought my 1060 6Gb MSi last year PCint was the cheapest

no point in buying from ebay at 5k, not sure if shipping and import fees are factored in. an EVGA 1070 card is 6600 on Amazon including shipping and import duties, gets delivered to your door with no extra fuss. The return policy is also really easy so if you have to send it back for whatever reason your covered.
But I would just check out local etailers - rebeltech ect for specials.

Get in touch rebeltech. Brilliant service and pricing. Better then evetech

Don't agree here.

When i was hunting to buy my PC i compared part for part (exact product and model) and the only thing rebeltech came in cheaper apposed to evetech was on the mobo.

I compared what i could between loot, PCint, rebeltech, evetech, ikonikIT, syberitic and a few others and evetech always came up top.
Although the only i noticed about evetech - their upgrade kits are a lot more expensive than buying the same parts separately which doesn't really make sense...

Yes I agree but my pc was a combination of parts from different shops not a single component came from rebeltech with pcint coming in way cheaper on my motherboard processor and cpu at the time

I buy about 90% of my items from ebay. Thwre will be dodgy people on there like any other platform. But atleast all sellers have ratings.

I would suggest you do it if you want to, aroubd 400 of my purchases from ebay 2 items got lost and 1 was a dodgy item. Went to ebay, filed a dispute and was reimbursed every single time 100% of my money. Ebays protection is amazing.

I know you guys are all recommending online, but I also had very good experience (price and service) with Computers Only in Midrand on a few components when I was last building. Haven't used them in a couple of years but they did their best to come in at or lower than what the e-tailers had advertised and they are very close to Rectron/Axiz/Pinnacle etc. so parts they don't have in stock are there same day. There is even a Matrix here in Kyalami that is a little store, but has been able to source things the same day as well as having wiggle room on price (probably because the decision makers are sitting at the till in the store which helps).

Sometimes brick and mortar plus human experience is also good and these guys have rental to worry about too. I feel like a small difference in price is justifiable if it keeps a physical store open close to home even if just for those times you might desperately need to walk in and buy a cable or drive urgently

When it comes to review sites, the recent AMD launches in CPU and GPU spaces have shown how many can be bought either for or against (sad state of journalism affecting motoring journalism as well) as well as how many 'influencers' are out there on Amazon, Reddit etc. posting 'reviews'. Always have your wits about you when making decisions like these based on reviews (we all have our biases after years, but honest reviews should create some kind of enticement for users of one side to try another if it is genuinely better vs. just beings shills AMD or Intel or nVidia)
