This white convertible belongs to a fanatic and is based in Tzaneen.

Car came in for the normal vanos and rattle kit repair and valve clearances.

We started off with doing valve clearances before moving to the vanos work.

Interesting deformation of non OEM air filter.

Head ready for final clearances.
You will notice that the retainers have been removed and as we finalise the clearance we re insert them.
We are simple folk and anything that can make life easier and not confuse us is welcome.

Clearances finalised and retainers inserted.

Unusual dirt on vanos unit. Our suspicion that the base plate seals must have had a leak were subsequently confirmed.

On removing the vanos unit this is what greeted us.
I was absolutely in a state of disbelief......I have read about it and have seen pics of it however I did not expect to see one this soon.
Clearly the oscillation that occurs with the tabs does put them under extreme stress and it then becomes a matter of time before something gives.

Oil pump disc which we will save by re drilling.

We shall take some close ups of the system and post.

If anyone knows of a vanos "gearbox set" please let me know.

We are off to the engineers in the morning to see whether the hub can be salvaged with some magic.

For those with M3s it is highly recommended that when doing vanos seals a rattle kit is done as well as the increased pressure is likely to bring out any weaknesses and the vanos will start rattling.
We have first hand experience on 2 cars now which had seals done and have now developed a slight rattle which will soon become a big rattle.
Equally drilling the oil pump disc on the s54 is a form of "peace of mind guarantee"

Shoo thats pretty scary....

You going to strip the sump to "look for bits"

Likely....I will though first use my Andygp present to see what I can pull out the sump

Every S54 owners worst nightmare. Doubt the hub can be saved. Time for a new Dr Vanos Cyro hub to go along with the drilling.

There a date stamp on that air filter?

Bro hugs.. time to call outsurance, need that extra R400. Guy wants 8K for the gear and well since BMW want around 13-15K for it, and importing it at the cheapest is 5K before shipping and taxes if Peter says its what is needed i will have to pony up.

Biesan is developing their own hub and oil pump disk to completely resolve this issue but that is still some 4 months off wont really help us right now :(

4 Months without ///M is 3 Months to long. And DR Vanos is so utterly insane in pricing you might as well go OEM.

Is this what we are looking for

Yup... see the gear on the right... It has teeth that stick out. The ones that Peter took photo's off from the car have ripped off.

So yes, the one in the photo above here is what you are looking for.

That is mighty frightening. Crazy what the hub goes for.

Hopefully the present will be of some assistance :)
