BMW X5 E70 3.0D Hard Start

Picked up car on Friday. All sorted by Bosch. New Bosch injector, 6 new glow plugs, fuel filter & labour came to a bit over R9k - about 5k less than BMW. Technicians not sure what caused the injector to fail but my strong suspicion is water ingress perhaps to the electrical connector due to damaged/broken engine partitioning below the windscreen. According to some overseas forums this is a known fault to BMW and as a result the new partitions are longer. I suggest anyone with an X5 or any BMW for that matter make sure these are in good condition. You wouldn't want water poring into your engine bay. I replaced this partition today cost R470 & it's sorted out the problem of water getting into the engine bay. Glad to have the beast back to good health  - it's being used as the wedding car this Saturday.

Thanks Sunnyj. It troubles me that you had to spend almost R10k. Am looking to buy an e53 or e70 during winter. A ten thousand repair on a recently bought car would be a pain on my side.

Would anyone know if this is a common problem with the X5?

Our X5 (35d) has been bulletproof so far, this is the first time I've heard about this issue...our diesel quality isn't very good either, so I'm a bit worried.

This may not be a common fault although it is a known fault to BMW. BMW will probably never admit it as this will lead to a recall. I suggest just keep the engine compartment free of leaks - check to make sure no water leaks in through the centre partition. These injectors should be good for 250000km I've been told by Bosch. BTW the fault to the injector was not mechanical but an electrical fault which is why I have a very strong suspicion it was caused by water. It would also be wise to clean the drain holes once in a while as these can clog up & cause leaks to other areas. Also never ever wash your vehicle with a high pressure hose :nonono:. Any good mechanic will tell the trouble these will cause - they do more harm to your vehicle than good.
