BMW X5 E53 starting problem

My X5 has developed an annoying intermittent starting problem. Quite often when I put the key into the ignition and turn to start nothing happens. The gear is in park and the ignition lights all come on as normal but nothing happens in the start position. I have tried using my spare key but makes no difference. It seems to rectify itself after repeatedly trying a few times, I also try pushing key in and out a few times and moving the gear lever from park to drive and back. It is not the battery nor the starter motor as the lights do not dim in start position and no click or other sound comes from the engine compartment. Anyone had a similar experience and if so any suggestions as to what the cause might be and how to solve this?

My e90 does this. In my case, pressing the start button again rectifies this. Annoying.

Maybe look up common ignition switch problems in the E53 on this and other forums? Sounds to me like that might be a culprit if the battery and starter are good. Or maybe a dodgy relay?
