BMW X5 3.0D vs X3 3.0D sound

Hi Guys,

I've test driven 2 vehicles back to back. Both M-Pack and both 3.0D engines. 1 is a X5(2012) and the other X3(2013).

For some reason the X5's engine sounds gruntier. Is it my imagination or have they put a different exhaust system on it to make it sound gruntier? The sportier X5 sound is great, however I would prefer an X3 due to the body size. However that 3.0D grunt sounds like 6-Cylinder Petrol. Just amazing! :)

I've compared previous X5's and X3's with same specs and same difference in sound.
From the specifications, the performance is the same.

Like to hear your thoughts.

Personally I'd go for the X5

Any particular reason why?
The F25 X3 is a generation newer than the 2012 X5.

But I don;t want o go off topic here, I'm interested to know whether I'm mistaken about the grunt the X5 has over the X3.

Its possible the exhaust is different. The X5 has dual outlets on either side while the X3 has outlets on one side. I also noticed the the X5 30d that my dad had sounded different to my 330d even though that spec X5 and 330d had the same engine specs. You should hear the X5 M50d. Best sounding stock diesel IMO.

Both cars have the same engines but the difference in exhaust length etc. might maybe be the reason why the x5 sounds "gruntier" than the x3.
Put a 76mm stainless downpipe on the x3 and smile all the way, these diesels sound amazing then.

You can go 1 step further and also remove the mid box when you install the DP. I did that on my car and it doesn't sound like a diesel at all.

I don't have the 320d anymore, but I did it to my 330d as well as removed the middle exhaust box and it sounds absolutely amazing. It's fairly loud from the outside ,but you don't hear too much inside the car under normal circumstances ,which I like.

This gives you bit of an idea.

While the engine might be the same, the X5 has a different Exhaust setup, larger intercooler etc....
