I bought a 200x (can't remember what year it is) 3.0d for my ex wife about a year and a half ago with 156,000kms on it. At first, seemed a good buy, car went pretty well, comfy, good power.

However, since then, it's been a ball ache of not. Replaced the vibration damper for about R6k. OEM part from BMW, not fitted by them, labour costs to exorbitant. It's had endless issues with overheating, despite being in about 4 times to have the issue resolved. The CD Shuttle didn't work from the word go, and hasn't been able to be repaired, cost of a new one doesn't deserve replacing it, so she uses the AUX and listens to the radio. She now has some rattling noise coming from the passenger side of the engine bay.
I've also had to have the EGR valve removed and cleaned, but not done any bypasses on the system. There was also an issue with the MAF or AFM or whatever these car used, car was lumpy and wouldn't accelerate, removed the MAF/AFM and the car ran absolutely fine. So had that replaced at some stupid cost.

I don't think it's necessarily the car, I think it MAY have been slightly unloved by it's previous owner. My initial impressions were pretty good, although I was slightly surprised by the fuel consumption overall. Average initially was around 12-13L/100kms, think she's managed to get it down to around 10-11L/100kms. But then again it is a big vehicle, so maybe not too bad in the greater scheme of things.

But ya, if you can get a decent aftermarket warranty (which may be difficult considering the mileage, there are others here way more clued up than me on that), and it passes all it's checks with flying colours, you'll love that smoothness of the engine and the delivery of the torque from quite low down, and it is a comfortable car to cruise in.

Just my 2c.

Sounds like you had a bit of an unloved car there Bugger... :blueCry:

Those motors will go forever if the car has been looked after... Yes vibration damper is a bit of a service item at higher mileage and needs to be budgeted for. Possibly engine mounts also at higher mileage

That's what I think too Rob. I know a lot of people that love their X3's, think this one was just a lemon. And seeing it the other day, because of the issues, the ex doesn't care much for its upkeep, which pisses me off.

I saw that, hahaha, congrats btw. Hope you're very happy! Well I look at the engine in my 04 330D, and other than some hiccups with vacuum leaks and an initial overheating problem, that car is an absolute gem to drive, and it's got the M57N (whereas the X3 has the M57N2 I think?) but it's just such a great car to drive.

Jared you just need to do your homework, that's all. As Rob said, they're awesome engines and will last forever if looked after properly. Think the highest mileage one on the forum at one stage was over 350,000km's and going strong.

Good luck!

i would look for the following items to see if they are worn, need replacing or have been replaced already.
dampner pulley - OEM pulley is R6k+, conti pulley is about R3500 and probably around R3k labour
gearbox service - normally done around 150k km and costs around R5500
front suspension - check the control arms, tie rod ends, ball joints
brakes - at the mileage check what the life is on the disks, mine is on 160k and is due for new front disks and pads ( first set was replaced under motorplan) - by estimate ranges from R3000 to R6000 depending on brand.
transfer case - any repairs or issues
