Hey guys I have. A question I have been reading on the net about x drive failiures on x3's. Has anyone on here had a failiure ?
What year and model was your car and on how many km?
Has bmw sorted this problem or are all X drive X3s doomed

Cheers

Thanks I Am. Enjoying mine aswell I think it is magic but I was watching a video on youtube "bmw xdrive 4x4 system" that is a animation of the system in action. But it makes you realise how many components are in the system $$$$$$

The transfer case on my wife's 2005 X3 (3.0i) failed at around 130000 km. I opted to replace it with a new unit to get the warranty, because rebuilding it would have been 75% of the cost of a new replacement.

The bearings on the internal shaft wore out, causing the chain drive to stretch and it started rubbing on the case. There were no symptoms other than sounding & feeling like a failed wheel bearing.

According to ZF in Germiston (who rebuilds transfer cases), it is a common failure with early X3's.

The X5 uses a sturdier transfer case.
