BMW in Zimbabwe

I frequent my home country Zimbabwe a lot. Of late I discovered something that if i had enough money I would do. Many Zimbabweans are buying BMWs especially the 3 series. They used to buy lots of the E46 from Japan which for some reason didn't share some parts with the SA version. Now the E46 is slowly becoming a thing of the past & there are many E90s now on the bad roads. Most E90s are bought in SA because its cheaper (if you are patient) to get an SA E90 even LCI than from Japan. Even those from Japan (I think) share parts with the SA version. Very soon there could be thousands of these cars on the road. Now with the G series coming (G20 I hear for the F30), the E90 will definitely be even more common in Zim BM lovers because it will be even cheaper to acquire here. People there buy cars for cash so most will afford the E90s than F30s.

Their biggest challenge is a reputable BM workshop that side. In Harare you get places like Quest or Croco Motors which overcharge everything. So you get some the regular BMW owners driving their cars down to SA for repairs & even services then it still works out cheaper. Those with undrivable vehicles send relatives who live here to buy them parts & courier them via trusted busses. Most just buy parts from the BMW dealer & its still cheaper than aftermarket stuff in Zim.

Cars in Zimbabwe break easily because of stuff like dirty fuel, petrol with too much ethanol and terrible roads so there will be business. With proper money & caution, one can make themselves some US dollars just by bringing the service closer.

With Mugabe gone for good, nearly everything will come back to life & everyone is now hopeful. With a reputable workshop, more people would buy even more BMWs which will bring even more busyness. Who doesn't love these machines.

as a current BMW driver in Zim, i can tell you that since Mugabe has gone, not much has changed. Quest/Croco etc dont overcharge for everything, they just dont have any spares or have anything in stock for that matter...so theres no point even visiting them.

Quest motors BMW section, is literally a desk with one service advisor manning it. E46's are still extremely common here, more than the E90 infact. And the Jap E46 has identical spares to the E46, i have replaced alot in mine (ex UK) from second hand breaker Jap cars.

You do realise there are no USD's in this country right? and that had all disappeared very quickly in 2016. For anyone to think about investing in Zim right now, is suicide.

You'd need to spend more time "back home" to understand what things are like on the ground unfortunately.

Some of my varsity buddies in Zim when they need to send their cars for service, They put their cars on on a truck... about 5 cars at a time. Truck drives from Harare to Joburg (Kya Sands top be exact) there is a guy there that does all the work that needs to be done and then load up on the truck and send them back.

They say this is way cheaper than it is to have them serviced and repaired in Zim.

I think with time stuff will change. Although not much has changed, it is looking up. I think experiences differ from person to person, i have people who see change & others who don't. I still think however that in a few years time, someone can make money through such business if all goes well.

its all just #FAKE news, just yesterday Delta announced they have 1 week's worth of Chibuku and soft drinks stock... because they cant import raw materials. that sums it up very well.

fact is, we don't see diasporans flocking to come back home since Mugabe is out... that also says alot surely?

:skit: DAMMIT thats not good news at all there will be riots. :biglol:
yip - my fam in BYO also say nothing has changed yet and dont expect anytime soon.
But having said that we have been doing design on some of the existing mines up there so at least they have released some monies to start things up, but it will take time to filter back into the system.

hahahahahahaha, i'm glad you caught on with that :roflol:

we laugh, but yeah... people will be extra aggro when their beloved opaque booze disappears soon.

the ease of doing business has improved somewhat. the laws are now clear on the 51% thing, and everyone knows where they stand. this is good.. however, the economy itself is completely buggered, and getting worse still.

honestly this hope thing that we have here, its exhausting ..:dunnoanymore:
