I just want to know if i need to worry about the timing chain on a 2011 320d (A) sitting on 119000km and due for a major service. Its not stated anywhere if this must be replaced after certain mileage. Let me know if i am worrying over nothing

I doubt that it will be on the cards as part of the service - BMW would probably have it listed as lasting a lifetime...well, what they consider a lifetime.

There are reports of wear on the timing chain for that engine, but it was sometime in 2011 (I think) that the designed was improved slightly to improve reliability. Not sure if there were recalls for older models.

It's 50/50 whether BMW will know what you are talking about, but worth asking. Cost wise it'll probably be pretty pricey, but the alternative is a new motor. That being said, I have only seen a handful of failure reports on it from overseas - nothing this side.

Hopefully someone else has more insight for you

Apparently the timing chain on the n47 is located at the rear of the engine and one hell if a job. Is that true? Sorry for the highjack

Yep, right at the back which is why it's such a pain to do, and also why it's so expensive.

As soon as that chain snap the "lasting lifetime" of it will be over.
Lifetime of the chain...not your lifetime,
that's what they had in mind.

My E90 320d 2011 model has 211000km mileage and when it idles there is a rattling noise coming from the back of the engine. When I place it in gear (automatic) especially the reverse gear, the noise is worse. When I drive the noise disappears. This sounds like the timing chain. Anyone else can confirm this?
