If in wrong section could admins/mods please move to appropriate section.
So my buddy came round and loaned me the tools seeing I had a stem seal job, removed the necessary and proceeded to which was quite an 'easy' job to do, with the right tools of course lol.

labour took me about 4 hrs but way better than removing the cylinder head, end result, no more white smoke, just thought I'd share some pics
Cheers

Is pita to get to last 2 stem seals on no.4 of the N42 and N46 but there's a way to get them out, patience and a steady hand is key in this operation lol.
One of my mates told me of the experience bmw (not sure which branch in CPT) had/have of doing stem seals on the N42/N46 only for the car to return, turns out some of their mechs only replaced up to no.3 as it's difficult to get to the last 4

Same story with the 6 cylinder N52, the last two valve stem seals on the exhaust side are borderline impossible to get to!

Hwzit guys i replaced my vavle stem seals without removing the cylinder head.

I supplied the special tool to PROCAR in durban. They technicians did a good job changing all 16 seals. Cost me R4000 Labour only as i provided the seals & special tool. No more smoke. Car is 2006 320i N46 Engine.

My tool is worth R10.000 works on all bmws without removing the cylinder head

Hi
I´m barking down the same road as you, and thank you for your guide. I have high oil consumption and smoke coming out of exaust. I´ve read all forum threads there is to find and I´ve come to the conclusion that it must be my valve seals thats gone bad. I have a 2006 320i, 180 000/km.

I´m thinking of doing the job myself as well. Is it possible that you could extend your guide, to your prework? Did you take pictures in the beginning as well?

I´m feeling a little bit insecure about the camshaft, chain and getting the timing wrong when I put everything back together again. Did you use marks or other tricks. In some other guides they have special tool kits for removing the camshaft. I think they are for loking the cams in place. Is that necesary?

Thinking of changing the cam chain when I´m already at it, time for change is coming up soon.

There´s a bunch of BMW E46 videos and guides out there, the engins look similar. Are they of any help for me you think?

Many question marks??? :)

By the way 4 hours are really impressive. I´m thinking a weeks job :)

Excuse my bad english.

Hi
Done the job and the smoke is gone
The piston springs were the fiddliest. I created a tool for compressing them.
But i havent got the timing right. The engine drives unevenly on low rews.
Im sucpisious towards my timing tool.
Anybody heard of bad timing tools out there?
I also have a new rattle sound from the chain. But i cant figure out what i in that case am doing wrong. It dosen't feel like rocket sience tensioning the chain and securing the timing position.
The car drives but i've lost power as well.
Thinking of leaving it to a workshop. My energy got lost after two timing attempts.

Of Course i mean the springs holding the valves were fiddly.

Hi chefer, loaned the set I used from a buddy of mine, then later I bought it from him, only for it to be stolen by someone (drug addict) who, let's just say regrets it to this day.

Pelle sent you a pm, I've tried countless times before but the tapatalk app isn't the best when it comes to messaging.
