BMW E46 318i overheated

Hi. Anyone can assist with some info. My 318i (2000 model) recently overheated due to the impeller on the waterpump breaking in 2. I am contemplating if I should attempt to redo the engine or rather just buy a 2nd hand unit. The pistons feel a little loose so it should involve a rebore, head recon and spares. I figure around R 23 000.... Will a 2nd hand unit be cheaper and if so, where do I buy it from? Any ideas?

From my limited deductive skills. The liners were honed from what I can see and the pistons all are loose. I can physically move from them side to side easily by just pressing on top of them with my fingers. That's how.loose they are. That is why I reckon a rebore should be the safer option....

Phoned a place called Bemow. Got the number from a friend. R 16 000.00 for an engine but no stock at the moment....

Staying in the Northern Cape (Postmasburg), there is not a lot of options as far as "proper" mechanics go. I will have to do most of the work myself but it will not be the first engine I have rebuilt in my life so it should be fine....

Movement of the piston at the top of the stroke is acceptable provided it is within factory spec.

If the piston moves mid bore I would worry.

How do you know the block was honed before?
Or
Are you referring to the factory honing marks?
