Bmw E36 M3 Potential Project

Hi Guys

Im keen on a project car and have seen this E36 M3.

Bmw E36 M3

Would this car be too much of a money pit to recover or would it be worth it in the end. I have fixed up a V10 M5 before, that cost around R100k to get into great condition. I'm hoping this would be less. Thoughts? @Gizmo and others that know a lot about e36s.

I also don't know what "oil burning rich means"

What you plan to do with it and what mods you want to do to it? From my experience I can tell you that if you doing it right it's going to cost you..e.g. for two timing chain guides I paid r8700..with all the tensioners etc costed close to 15k..this is just the timing system..but if you passionate about it why not..

Don't want to mod it, just want to restore to former glory. These are appreciating and potentially may be a good investment to have a neat one in the stable.

Agreed, E36 M parts are not as cheap as we all thought, this was also the reason i decided to sell my 98M3 instead of dumping cash into it and decided to go for an S54 engine car... the suspension refresh i had planned for the E36M3 was coming to over 35K in parts.

That's very useful to know, thanks. I'm hoping can source parts affordably and create a gem. It won't be a rush and certainly am not reliant on it for transport. At this happy to put 80k into it but don't know if that would be enough.

There's no mention of service history in the advert? I wouldn't be keen to dump cash into anything that doesn't have service history... it will still be worth less than one with service history to a prospective buyer later on...

23 year old car maintenance might be a bit challenging ... Things like rubbers and some plastic items will become hard, brittle and start cracking, Motor will need attention (service, change all fluids, service Vanos, replace rod Bearings, old Seals, leaking gaskets.ect), Gearbox and Diff may need a oil service if they still in good shape. Suspension will require attention as well as Wheel bearings. then the interior, you'll need screws, clips, trims ect.

80k can work out depending if the engine is in good shape...

Yeah you're a 100% right. My hope was that I would create a new base for the history of the car going forward with all preventative and regular maintenance going forward captured and documented.

R150 k is what you will put into it at a guess and I am being conservative a nappa leather re cover will set you back R50K.
Engine minimum R80k
A bit of paint at roughly R2K per panel and anything which is trim will make your eyes water and your pocket empty.

Rather spend the money on a clean car than try and fix a wreck.

Send "Via" a message and ask him for pics of his white M3 as it may go up for sale.

If you wish send me a pm and I will give you his contact details

If you are just looking to restore as a hobby and keep it forever, go for it. If you are looking at it as an investment, rather put your money in a 32 day account.

Very useful thanks, gives me perspective. The amounts I spent on the S85 made me think that the S50 could not be near as much. Will look into something else want to take a project and turn it into something.

I have gone to look at and the guy selling is a very lekker guy.

The car needs allot of work to get it to a a reasonable driving place and look. He gave me a good price for it which I told I would not share but the amount of work that needs to be done is easily 100k plus if u want it to be a propper e36 M3 .

I hope he gets a buyer for it that is willling to take the time and money to get it right. I was willing to but didn’t want to tide to it if difficult time came along.

Yep Code 3 is always a put off, you can get a car for cheap, and you can spend R1000's making it perfect, but it will always be a code 3 car, so any money put into it is a waste.
But code 3 cars make great track cars, buy it, strip it, sell the bits for some cash, and take it on the track.
