BMW E36 M3 off to bad start -literally

Morning all

So after acquiring my M3 saloon project car about three weeks ago which was in fairly good condition for its age , I decided that to day I would start making a list of things I may need for the restoration project.

I went out to the car and decided to start her and give her a bit of an idle. She started fine and I went about making up my list of parts that will be needed..... suspension etc. After about three minutes she died and now wont start...

After cranking a few times I realised that she wasn't having any of it.
I checked the fuel , there is enough in the tank. Using a bit of quick start down the air intake and she fired up and started , so there seems to be spark.
However , I checked the fuel pump fuse and there is no power at the pump fuse but very strangely when the ignition is initially turned on the pump spins.
The DME relay is good and the battery is full of power.
Questions for fellow owners:
Has anyone had similar experiences?
Where does the fuel pump get its signal and power from?
Does this possibly sound like a crank position sensor problem?

I don't have any diagnostic equipment as the car is in my garage, but if need be I may have it towed to a reputable BMW specialist , so any recommendations for anyone in the east of Joburg?

Thanks guys , all your input will be much appreciated

Thanks , I'm also thinking along those lines... having a look it seems like a PITA to get to , but I'm not too fussed about getting my hands dirty.
