Need assistance and advice here is the scenario:
I have a BMW E36 325i that needs some serious TLC. Car has +400K km's on the clock and is smoking and using oil. Car also has an electronic problem (got stuck on highway) I think its the engine or speed or crank sensor but I can't be certain, I wanted to inquire what would be better swapping out the engine with a 328i engine or overhauling the 325i engine?
On reading and searching the forum I have read that there are mixed feelings about buying a 328i engine and swopping out the old 325i engine and overhauling the original 325i motor in the car right now?
1. How much would it cost to complete an overhaul on a 325i motor (ball park figure). Engine definitely needs rings, bearings, etc (also the last few years of when the car has been running I have been driving the car quiet hard every time). Car uses about a pint of oil every week (about 300 km to 400 km's of driving and even more oil when the car is driven hard).
2. Any recommendations on where this can be done? I stay in Lenasia (South of JHB).
3. Where can I purchase a decent 328i motor in Johannesburg? Would the engine come with papers and would I still need to do a police clearance if this engine comes with papers (a real ball ache dealing with any government department).
I'm totally in the dark when it comes to self repair, so that is not even an option for me at this point. I really want to have the car running again and any advice would be greatly appreciated.
